New Presidential series mini dollars in 2007

I haven't heard anyone talk about this. According to the COINage's Coin Collector 2006 Yearbook magazine, 2006 is the last year of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. The mint will do one last minting of the 2006 near the end of the year. Then starting in 2007, four new mini-dollars will be released each year commemorating all of the US Presidents, beginning with Washington. According to the same article, the lincoln penny will change design in 2009 to four different styles depicting different eras of Lincoln's life. The US Mint just keeps hoping the public will finally start using the small dollar coin instead of paper $1.

the authorizing legislation stipulates that the sac will continue to be minted and circulate along with the pres dollars.

Of course neither one will circulate, so what will happen is they will both be minted and sit in government vaults and small amounts will be purchased by collectors.

I think the Presidential dollars will be as well received as the Sacs, and I hope the Lincolns join them.

The problem with the Sacagawea is that people kept confusing it with the quarter-- a new dollar should fix that. Wait, no, that was the SBA. The problem is that there's still a dollar bill circulating. The new dollar coin won't fix that. *Maybe* the public will start collecting/hoarding them, but they won't start using them.

I only hope that Cantor lets us take Jefferson off of the dollar coin once his turn is up!

I am right there with you. I get Sac dollars whenever I can and spend them. It is amazing how many cashiers have never seen one and ask what it is. Unfortunately my bank never gets them and I have to go to the post office.

  • The Japanese have 3 bills... a "$10" equivilant, a "$50" equilivant, and a "$100" equivilant. They use $5, $1, .50, .20, .10, .05, and .01 coins. It actually worked really well.

That's because you haven't been here very long. It was discussed extensively during the legislation and debate period and has been discussed a few times since its passage. but not recently. But that's ok, fresh discussion is good.

  • Sacagawea dollars will still be around(read:from the post office). Congress tagged on a stipulation that 1/3 of all dollars minted will be Sacs for the entire presidential run. The delegates from North Dakota wouldn't cough up their votes without it.

It's just a way for the Gov to sell something that costs 50 cents for $1. Toss in the First Lady gold coins at $150 over spot price, and it's quite a money maker. Since people hoard them they don't cause inflation in the economy.

  • I don't know about any of you, but I can't stand presidents on coinage. If they really want me to circulate dollar coins, BRING BACK LIBERTY!! I'm partial to the Walking Liberty design, but almost any Liberty would be better than another president's mug on one of our coins.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

All the President dollar coins will have Liberty on the reverse.

    Just spend them tails up.

But the word LIBERTY has been bannished from the coin completely.

So one-third will be Sackies as mandated. The 2007 mint set will run...let's say...2 million sets. So four presidents will be 16 million P$1 (Presidential dollars), that includes P and D. The Sackies will then be around 8 million. That's a total of 24 million P$1 and Sackies. Sounds like a glut.
Oh, BTW, I got a 2002-P Sackie in a roll...I thought they were collector coins only.
