I'm thinking that with the strong & weak descriptions that perhaps PCGS are referring to EDS as strong and LDS as weak. Just my wag. . .

Depends on the coin. I paid $1000 for one in that PCGS grade (VAM-4). A PQ, sight-seen or based on decent images could be worth more. Sight-unseen, I might not go much more than your price there.

  • Before PCGS recently starting certifying VAMs, the 1882 O/S VAMs 3 and 4 were called "Strong" (but that word was NOT used on the label), and the VAM 5 was called "Weak" (that word WAS used on the label). Currently the VAM 3 is called "Strong", and VAMs 4 and 5 are called "Weak".

The "weak" 82-O/S probably refers to either VAM 4 or 5, while "strong" refers to VAM 3. All three have early die states that could be considered "weak." I think PCGS has changed the coin numbers for these to include early and late die states of all three. To complicate matters, the early die states are no longer shown in the VAM book, and all are worth premiums over the late die states, regardless of strong or weak, which makes "strong" and "weak" rather meaningless terms concerning 82-O/S. The EDS of the VAM 4 is extremely rare. Use Rob's web page or something like the Top 100 book or my Top 100 software to keep them all straight. If you can post a picture of the mintmark of yours, you'll get an answer as soon as someone sees it.

That was my other thought, thanks for the explanation. . .
