Got some grades back - PCGS & ICG

PCGS:

Edward III Groat - BB for flan crack

Henry VIII Halfgroat - VF-20

Commonwealth Halfgroat - Not Returned

A customer service rep at PCGS told me that this coin was broken while at PCGS! I was paid the full value of the coin without any problem, but PCGS did have this order for almost six months.

ICG:

ROMAN EMPIRE Domitian Denarius - F-12

ROMAN EMPIRE Gordian III Silver Antoninianus - F-15
NOT PHOTOGRAPHED
In my opinion this coin should have graded high VF to EF

ROMAN EMPIRE Probus Bronze Antoninianus - EF-45
NOT PHOTOGRAPHED

NORTHUMBRIA Aethelred II Styca - VF-20

Edward VI Shilling - VF-35

  • how in the world do you mishandle a coin badly enough to break the coin???? I thought thier whole existence was owed to the handling and grading of coins?!?!?!?!?!

Many hammered British silver coins are very thin and delicate and they have been known to break. That said, I had owned that coin for about 12 years and moved it from holder to holder several times during those years without issue, so I am not sure what happened.

"A customer service rep at PCGS told me that this coin was broken while at PCGS! "

I suspect it was broken when they stuck it in an old gumball machine to check to see if it was counterfeit.

Shouldn't they holder the pieces and call it a mint error? I've seen it done with broken Canadian $2, and with a US Morgan dollar - both with the pieces in separate holders.

That would have been classy of them, but I did not ask and they did not offer.
