Tom,
Not ignorant at all. Its a die varieity that has all sorts of die polish and die gouges. There are several known states, one having a big gouge out the top of liberty's head, hence the "thorn head" designation. Here's a page that has all the known stages:

Not sure but I'll include some QX-5 close-ups when I receive the coin.

I'm hoping for a die state 4a but a die state 6 in this condition will make a nice upgrade to my other 1B6.
