Doubling

Hi, Everyone.
I have a general question: I see a lot of posts here about doubling errors, and it made me curious about something: What causes doubling on one part of a coin, and not another? I always thought that doubling was the result of a double strike. I would think this would mean that the entire face of the coin (either the obverse or reverse) would be doubled, since the coin is struck all at once. Could someone explain it to me? Thanks.

If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.
