What are your 20 favorite coins?......

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you had to limit your collection to 1 box (20 coins) what would YOU fill it up with. You have to be able to buy them, so don't say 1804 dollar 1933 $20 etc.

What 20 affordable coins would you pick.

    The box of 20 concept makes no sense to me. Why limit yourself to owning only 20 coins?

    i cant afford them and am not in the market for any coins right now

    but my top 20 coin picks box of twenty

    1795 flowing hair half dollar a nice full rim vg or better 1200-3500.00

    2--- a choice proof only date heavy cameo trade dollar the only coin ever demoninatized and officially made for the orient and just a beautiful coin 5500-9500.00

    3---- a choice proof cameo no motto seated dollar civil war years cool coins historic and terribly undervalued you cant go wrong with this coin 4800-6500

    4---a nice choice unc saint 1927 1928 just one of the most beaituful coins and these dates come with some really sexy eye appeal around 900 or so

    5----a cool three dollar gold piece a better date either a civil war date or one of the lower mintage dates choice xf to choice au 2500 to 5500.00

    6--- maybe a pre civil war proof gold coin cameo rare and just plain image early proof gold coin i think you can buy lets say an 1860 gold dollar in a really choice proof close to gem with cameo for 10k ++ and also the 1859 is available also

    7---- a civil war choice proof gold cameo type coin cool civil war issue and rare but sometimes available
    might cost you in the really high teens
    8---a one year type proof coin the satin proof buff nick 1936 with wild coloration in choice to gem proof 2500+++++++

    9----a small eagle bust dollar way cool and many times more scarcer than their common large eagle counterparts hmmmmm a coin with no adjustment marks or problems and also full rims say choice fine to choice vf range 3500-7500

    10---a really cool odd deomin9ination coin a choice proof cameo three dollar gold piece way cool
    hmmmmmmmmmm 14k++++

    11---a one year type coin the 1859 indian head cent choice to gem ms 1000-3500

    12----a gem proof rb classic head half cent from the 1830's need i say more?? hmmmm 11k+ i love the classic head coin it is way cool and has a unique early american look to it no other usa coin has

    13--a choice au to gem mass half cent with the majic 1787 date the first american half cent and the first coin to have the word cent on it also the standard when used by the first minted half cents by the philly mint in 1793 1792 tried to imulate this coin and the only coin copper coin with a demonination on it 1000-9500

    14---the king of lincoln cents the 1909 matte proof lincoln cent in gem red way cool and more available and a better value then its highly priced and not as available cousin the 1909 vdb matte proof wait folks 2009 is fast approaching!!!

    15----a gem type two silver three cent piece one of the most undervalued type silver coins of the 19th century 3500 ++++

    16---a gem twenty cent piece with a good strike more than likely an 1875-s with the sexy san fran mintmark

    6500+++

    17---how about the last cc mintmarked quarter 1878-cc from the sexy carson city mint and with the cancelled die obverse choice unc to gem unc?? 3500++++

    18--a gem mintstate capped bust half dime even more undervalued than the type two fish scale
    3500++

    19--- you got to get a large cent from pre 1800 times way cool 200 on up

    20-- a cool superb au coin to low ms coin bust half 1000-1750

    now folks these are just my dream coins you can go lower in grades say to vf xf does not have to be gem unc even go ms 63 and then you lower the cost for most all not including the proofs into the hundreds of dollars

    so it is a mix and match thing and with the cc coins maybe a nice circ type set i could sleep at night knowing that i am safe and liquid if i buy nice circ type coins in the few hunddre dollar range or less

    any pre 1915 circ type coin is way cool and with much opportunity and value

    Nice coins guys.

    Perryhall, I'm not saying you should only have 20 coins in your collection. It was just to see what the TOP 20 would be I guess.

    Anyway, thanks everyone. All the coins listed sound neat to me. I like the proof seated and barber coins also.

    Limited to only 20? I'd just put loose change in that box. Not worth being a coin collector with only 20 coins.

    Actually I could see 2 boxes of 20. One would be the 20 top key dates, semi keys and better dates in the Morgan series; the other keys like the 16-D Merc, some early dollars, 09-S VDB, 1877 IHC, 55-DDO Lincoln, etc and so on and so forth. image

    Jon >>

    That depends on wether or not one considers the 1792 disme a pattern or the first dime. If one considers the half disme a production coin then shouldn't one also allow the same statis for the couple of silver examples known of the disme?
