What is a certified coin that never gets recognition but you can never find?

After reading a coinguy1 thread of under appreciated coin I started think of what coins I have been looking for a long time but cannot seem to find.

An 09-s VDB, 16-d, 32-d, High Relief, etc. don't even need to be identified by denomination they are so well know and are readily available at auction usually in multiples. But they are often thought of as 'rare'.

I have been looking for an au50-58 or ms62 1889 Eagle $10 for almost 5 years and they are never in a dealer's case. A few have passed through ebay but they were raw or in ANACS. Interestingly with only about 2 dozen PCGS graded in MS they can be had for less than a few thousand dollars. Circulated go for much much less. So here's a coin which is rarely seen, has tiny pops and is reasonably priced. But how do I get my hands on one?

  • Uncirculated PCGS 1896-S Morgan is very difficult to find.

At least it was difficult for me to find.

Isabellas are as common as dirt in grades up to and including 63 at least. Now, ones that are nice to look at? A different story.

oh my what a great thread question

my my my my my my my my my my my my my............................

    well here goes..........................................

gem proof rb with a slight cameo obverse classic head half cent well most all true proof classic head half cents are slightly cameo!!

i think the best coin is the diplomatic presentation coin year 1834 as the king of siam 1834 proof set is the best and number collest original proof set ever

i like the rb with a little color for these coins then just brown

    ______________________________________________________________________________

a nice circ small head 1795 half dollar there is an undervalued neat type coin that is much more scarcer than its dollar big brother only three overton numbers 126 127 128 127 is out of reach i think rarity 7+

128 is in my minds eye rarity 6- even though the nuts think it is r5+ and it has been rarity 5 since the late 1960.s!!! and has increased in rarity a feat not done by many bust halves

    amazing to say the least

let me give you an example from my vast library of little known facts about bust and flowing hair halves which no one really knows or cares aboutimage

in may 1968 the excat date excapes me but quite a collection of bust halvers was offered by coronet in manhasset ny and in it was a 1795 flowing hair half dollar o-128 listed as r5!! and not only has it not changed in rarity downward it has gone upward to r5+ with some includingmyself thinking r6-

my census confirms the r6- well i like to think soimage

another coin you never see for sale is the 1874-p trade dollar in any circ grade let alone uncirc

you can always find practically any cc any day of the week but try to find any circ even a damaged cleaned circ 1874 trade dollar a truly unsung rare coin so rare in fact it makes the 1893-s in circ or even the 1895 proof only morgan look like a common coin

all went to china well 99.99% and the majority of those where melted makes a great type coin if you can find one for not much over a generic later dated s mintmarked trade dollar or the common cc coins

again they are certified and no one knows or caresimage

also go to find any trade dollar even the most common ones in a choice xf or super nice au that are totally original uncleaned and with good not great but good eye appeal also a needle in a haystack

go and try to find a choice to gem unc trade dollar that has not been dipped blast white with a thick flemy white skin totally undipped or cleaned unmolested with great eye appeal extremely hard to find

close to impossible to find in an 1874imageimageimage

    ____________________________________________________________________________________

any small eagle bust dollars that are a nice choice fine to choice vf with full rims and no adjustment marks and no problems................... au's you can find wirth no adjust marks or very few compensated great lustre and no problems but it is out of reach for many huge $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    ________________________________________________________________________________

wildly red toned mostly original red with that olive green
toned gem mintstate barber dimes with great lustre

certififed yes but they are just not out there rare!!
    ________________________________________________________________________

oh yes a gem mintstate wildly toned calcelled die obverse 1878-ss quarter with also the cancelled die also through the shield ribbons on the reverse!! some are certified but you never see as such as per the above expecially not monster toned hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmimage

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

how aboujt a gem rainbow toned anything silver before 1834 with a thick original skin so think it is like glazing on a donut hence never dipped or ever played with many are certified but a coin such as this may exist but it is rare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! even if it is not monster toned and just original flemy white never dipped and gem would be a great rarity for any silver coin pre 1834

    _______________________________________________________________________________

how about a true gem 65 any date thick skinned white barber half dollar with great eye appeal

many well some are slabbed ms65 but not like my defination as such

    ____________________________________________________________________________

oh how about one last piece as this can go on forever with me

    hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

how about a pre civil war proof gold coin that is strongly cameoed with a great deep orange gold look to them and miles deep watery mirrors more watery than any modern proof gold coin cant explains it you just got to see it to understand it

    _______________________________________________________________________________

There are many, many better date gold coins that fit your description:

not rare in the PCGS pop reports, but virtually unavailable in problem-free "collector grade"

I will give you two examples from another recent thread:

    1855-D and 1861-D gold dollars in XF-40/45

What about a full strike 35-D Buffalo in 65?

(Edit: I meant to say 34-D. Happy fingers got in the way. Sorry)
  • For us modern folks - 1976 Kennedy in 65 or 66 been looking for some time now. I have the D ( it has since tripled in price since I got mine image ) and silver, but the P is hard to find.

  • Many of the 1878 and 1880 Morgan VAM varieties seem to be very elusive in PCGS.
I look over all the offerings of most of the dealers and auctions but few show up in any grade.
