2009 cents

There was a letter to the editor in the new Coin World (3-20-06 pg 11) suggesting a reprise
of the 1909 cents for 2009.

This sounds like a great idea except I would suggest they also have a 2009-D and 2009-D VDB
with the Philly and proof San Francisco coins. They should be struck in the old alloy as well.
Tempus fugit.

They should be struck in 1908 since that is the true 100th year of production. Hopefully they'll do the right thing & retire the design after
    all the fanfare.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

They should also make a circulating business strike SanFrancisco Cent for (what I hope is) the final year.

    I'm excited

maybe have 1909-2009 stamped on it image

and if they do decide to retire it, 09 would be the year to do it... although I'd hate to see it go

Given that Mint seems to be doing everything it can to drown the baby (i.e. the current popularity of coins) with all of their new products (i.e. an overkill amount of new and often needless items) I would say we could realistically expect the following:

    PS

    I can't believe I forgot this:

    2 Words: BUFFALO LINCOLN!!!
  • Odds say something on artist's list will happen.

I'd expect to see a Lincoln Memorial and Lincoln Wheat cent struck in gold.

For all you all night Lincoln cent collectors. The US Congress has passed and the President of the United States has signed legislation as to exactly what will appear on Lincoln cents in 2009 and then what will appear in 2010 and beyond. If you are interested, I would suggest you spend a few minutes on the internet checking it out. Steveimage

TITLE II--ABRAHAM LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL 1-CENT COIN REDESIGN

    Section 201. Findings

This section finds that the nations' 16th President was one of its greatest leaders, demonstrating true courage during the Civil War. It also finds that he rose from humble origins to the Presidency through a combination of honesty, integrity, intelligence and commitment to the United States. The section also finds that all Americans could benefit from studying President Lincoln's life, and that redesigns of the reverse of the one-cent coin, first issued on the centennial of President Lincoln's birth, would be helpful in illustrating different phases of his life.

Section 202. Redesign of Lincoln Cent for 2009

The section specifies that during calendar 2009, the Secretary of the Treasury shall issue one-cent coins with the obverse design being the Victor David Brenner design first struck on the cent coin in 1909, and a different reverse design every three months. Those reverses would represent President Lincoln's birth and early years in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois, and his Presidency in Washington, D.C.

Section 203. Redesign of reverse of 1-cent coins after 2009

Section 203 specifies that the reverse of one-cent coins issued after the Lincoln bicentennial year shall bear an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the Union during the Civil War.

Section 204. Numismatic pennies with the same metallic content as the 1909 penny

This section allows the Treasury Secretary to strike and issue one-cent coins during 2009 with the same metallic content as the original `Lincoln' cents issued in 1909.

    Section 205. Sense of Congress

The section states that the original design for the Lincoln cent was a dramatic work and that it is the sense of Congress that if at all possible the Lincoln likeness on the 2009 cent coins should be reproduced in the original form and with the original relief.

I don't believe any of this. I think there is going to be a complete change to the cent and it will now be Calvin Coolidge on the pennies. The reverse will be an Eagle sitting on top of a Buffalo eating Grass (you know which kind).

After the collector edition in 2009 of the Lincoln Cent ..I think it would seem appropriate that the cent retire with dignity. It has served a great function in our coinage and thru our history. Our economy has changed in as such the cent is no longer required. The time has come to regard this great coin with respect not just another piece of trash on the street...................image
    ......Larry........image
  • actually, the bill also states that after all those are done, they WILL continue with the Lincoln cent, same obverse, new reverse. Now the memorials will become more collectable, like the wheats!image
    How much for that one

Actually I believe it says that any cents struck after 2009 will have a reverse commemorating Lincolns holding together of the union. But it doesn't mandate that cents be struck after 2009, just what will be on it if they are continued. So it would still be possible for legislation to order their retirement after the 2009 commems.
