Gotta like how the Pafko isn't even listed!
  • Hi everyone,new here...

Yeah, looking at the old prices is kinda fun, makes you wonder what people will be saying about current price guides in 20 years or so. I recently went through some of my old Becketts from the early '90s and prices on a lot of the vintage cards haven't changed much at all. In some cases the values have dropped, for example check out Steve Carlton or Carl Yaz cards.

In one of my first posts here, I scanned this March 1, 1968, priceguide from The Card Collector's Company. I remember buying some 1962 Topps World Series and Babe Ruth cards to complete those subsets.

The logo was always a favorite of mine, too:

I've got the rest of the catalog scanned, too, if anyone wants to read through it...

  • $250 for a Wagner, Wow! I wasn't collecting at that time. It is amazing how the hobby has evolved over such a relative short period of time. Thanks for sharing.

  • Am I reading that right? Was the 52 bowman Mays worth more than the Mantle?

  • I'll take a 52 Bowman set for $400
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Yeah, the '52 Bowman Mays was more than the Mantle. Luv these old price guides.....if only we knew then. The '73 topps set in my guide doesn't even list Schmidt's rookie....just a common in '79 I guess!!!! I'll take a dozen of those ones!!

    Cool Cuda

I'll tell ya. I shouldn't be allowed in here!

I went to a show around 78 in NYC - it had coins, games, some antiques, misc. collectibles and some card sellers/dealers?

I saw a really nice 52T Mantle for around 300$ and the guy said he would take offers.

I was in school at the time and couldn't afford 30 bucks...

But still I told my friend Andy who was a coin collector that it was not worth that kind of money and he agree - being a coinhead, he talked of intrinsic value and all that...

And, even if someone had picked up a lot of that stuff around 68 to 79 - they would have probably sold it way before the days of PSA and investor suits.

    thanx for sharing
