I was on the airplane, quietly reading my QDB Commemorative Encyclopedia....
Longacre

... when the flight attendant says to me, "hey, I have a bunch of those Bicentennial quarters. Are they worth anything?". Well, I was going to laugh and snicker, and make a snide remark about "damn moderns". However, Longacre is no fool. I knew that this lady was the only person standing between me and the free flowing cabernet sauvignon at 35,000 feet. So I gritted my teeth, tried to smile, and replied, "those coins are pretty common due to the high mintages and the fact that so many people tended to save them; I don't think they're worth more than face value."
Then she mentioned that she had an "old silver dollar that her mother gave her" from the 1800's. She said that someone told her it was only worth a few dollars, and that she couldn't believe that something so old would have so little value. I gave her one of my best sympathetic looks, and I told her that I understood, but some some silver dollars are just not worth much. Throughout the flight, she always seemed to be interested in what page I was reading in the book.
PS. I think being nice paid off. She gave me the last hot fudge sundae.

<< <i>There ya go, nothing wrong with being nice to people. >>
That's because he didn't go to dealer school
Longacre is reading coin books in public to attract babes...and he scored (a hot fudge sundae)! If Mrs. Longacre finds out about this, he might have to find a less cool hobby.
When I got back into "real" collecting coins, I put mine on eBay. I got about 1.5X face so I guess that's not bad for circulated modern coins. I did search them first. No DD's.
collections: Maryland related coins & exonumia, 7070 Type set, and Video Arcade Tokens.

as quoted by RYK ...(while he pushes his glasses with the tape in the middle back up and adjusts his pocket protector)

I wish I'd known this would have worked when I was single.
Perhaps an "I'm a Top Pop" tee shirt.

I'd give you the world, just because...
Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

How do we know that "someone" wasn't an unscrupulous dealer trying to rip an 1893-S for common-date Morgan money?
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
Or an unscrupulous collector?

Come on, we're talking coin collecting here. We have to take baby steps. We must embrace the extra hot fudge sunday, maybe tomorrow an extra moist towelette.
