Classic Collectors, Modern Collectors, are they oil and water?

Both collect coins, build sets, vlaue nice original condition, etc. Why the animosity and attacks? You really have more in common than different.

Being a primarily type set collector I have both, and can value both for what they are. In both cases I worry about retaining my value and am only willing to tie up so much money. If I get a super high grade on a modern, I sell it and use the next lower grade in my collection. Should I get so lucky on a classic, I would likely do the same.

Face it, no matter what, if we collect coins we've got a bit of the geek in us. Why slam each other? Lucy alludes to schoolyard bullies, but in this case it's like the bullied beating up on one another... What a pitiful waste.

Threads like Laura's prove we do, as a group of coin collectors, get along. Think about it. There's a number of ways it could of turned out bad but didn't. The discussion, for the most part, remained civil and informative. I learned much and believe others may have too.

Disagreeing vs 'not getting along' are not in the same arena.

I'm too far out in left field to argue about coins. I love coins. I love currency more. And I love rare and back of the book stamps even more. So, I'm happy. Beisdes, it doesn't matter what coin it is it's either a 1 or a 2.

1 = That's nice. I like that!

2 = Stupid coin

Well that got garbled up a bit didn't it? should be "big money from one grade to another". Potential conflict
is built into coin collecting.

I think in fact we all do get along quite well - most of the "disagreements" I attribute to blow, bluster and personal preference. Face it, most of us can in no way afford the high-end (even much of the low-end) classic stuff. So what are we to do? Give up on a hobby that we enjoy so much. Nonsense. Laura (and others) can have her/their millions, I will be happy with my hundreds and the variety it will afford.
