<< <i>I'll be the first to pipe in... it looks like a lot of PR69DC's that I've seen, yet they've been more like $20-$30 coins.... >>
Hell, given the size of the picture, it looks like a lot of raw ones you can get for less than that. Someone's putting the "greater idiot" theory to the test here, as far as I'm concerned.
You guys are good. I wonder if PCGS will honor their grading guaranteed on this one? With all the distractions in the reverse fields it is tough so see how this one made 70. I wonder why there have been zero PF70s in all these years, and now two in a month at PCGS. What are the odds that there will be many more 70s in months to come, now that the barrier has been broken? I wonder who will end up owning this 70 coin and who has the other one and if they want to dump while they are the only two out there, or if they want to keep because they think their coins are uniquely worthy.
Bigger pic:
Odds are 50-50 that this one was sent for grading thru Teletrade and while it says result pending, it may not show as a sale. The five figure high bid may have been the sellers reserve because he/she wants to take delivery on the coin instead of selling it. I wonder how much it would go for on Ebay with a $1 start and no reserve or at a Heritage auction. Anyone with insight into the Ike market want to hazard a guess? A coin that looks below standard for the grade according to the educated crowd here, but is pop 2/0 (today) and a prize for a PCGS Ike registry.
The imperfections you see on the reverse are from lighting--minor metal flow (like lustre, but almost none on a proof), and the "haze" is a lighting reflection.
That said, I stand by my original comments, even if this is a true "70" in hand.
<< <i>I AGREE WITH THE CENSUS HERE. I THINK A NICE PF69DCAM PKOK LOOKS A WHOLE LOT BETTER FOR ABOUT 1/10TH TH PRICE

So as the Ike expert you think this PF70 is a $250-$300 coin? Even at Pop 2/0 PCGS? Heck, I'd probably buy it at $250, and I don't even collect Ikes. Pop 2/0 with the Registry has got to mean at least $500 or $1000 as long as there are not ten more of these puppies out in the next report, no? $11000 like it was bid at is out of line, but do you really believe a a person could get near this coin for $300?
/ Edit: Holy Toledo, I checked the auction and it crossed at $14,500 plus juice makes it a $15k+ coin / Are there two or more Ike collectors drinking Koolaid or what? $15k for a coin that most collectors think is poor for the grade, but because it has the number "70" on a little sheet of blue paper, a $30 coin sells for 500 times that amount.
<< <i>I wonder how long it would take to get a 70Dcam if you bought (100) 69Dcams and kept submitting them?? >>
Well it took all these years for the first two 70s (pop 2/0), but I'd bet there about a thousand of the same date coming in during next year considering what this one sold for and that it looks unexceptional.
The interesting thing about the two that have been made is that they are both from the same submission, and were just graded. The other is cert # 9507. That is one HAPPY submitter.
Personally, I think the price is a little high but not by that much. As with the first of anything, this one brought some big bucks but on the same token, the 73S (a pop 2 coin) is about 5 grand cheaper while the 77S ( a pop 5 coin) is 3 grand cheaper!
As far as the difference between the 69 and the 70. There is a big difference. My 2005 SAE which went through a Presidential Review looked absolutely perfect to me but got the 69 because of 2 minute blemishes right next to the rim on the obverse.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
I'm sure if DH looked at it, the coin really is perfect. By beef is the value is largely related to the PCGS Registry and there is no inherent market, or big collector base, outside of that. I low pop modern 1932D MS65 (one MS66) Washington Quarter is still valuable as an MS-63 or Au-58 to hundreds of collectors.

Slim chance that Mr. Hall looked at the two PF70 Ikes. I think he only gets involved on very high profile coins, or if an expensive coin comes back for review or the guarantee. PCGS slabs dozens of $10k value and up coins every week. I imagine that only coins that are $500k and up get looked at by Mr. Hall. These Ikes might be special to those who collects Ikes, but they are not that special to PCGS.
Again, I am a bit stunned because the Ike collectors on board were close to unanimous in giving this coin the thumbs down. The dissenters in the group are coming in after I added the price realized to the title.
What are the odds that the buyer could pick out their coin out of a pile of 10 PCGS PF69s with the grades hidden? One-in-ten or no better than chance? If I were giving odds, I'd put it at less than that . Man, that Koolaid must be strong stuff.
which seller/promoter/submitter of proof/ms modern coins getting grades of 70 on here is willing to buy this coin AND THEN BREAK IT OUT of its holder and then see how much it sells for??
You think the buyer (and seller) has the nerve to have their picture taken for publication for setting a record for an Ike? My bet is the seller will run and the buyer will fade away.

In fact, the nicest proof Ike I've ever seen was an NGC PF68UC. Sold for around $24, I think.

Thats because a 69 and a 70 are basically the same thing. Its a crapshoot.

I thought I really knew this hoard: I've seen and owned PR68DCAM's but have yet to hear of one that is PR69DCAM?
I'd love to see a photo of that one!

Is this coin 2 such blemishes away from losing 98% of its value?
