How would you grade this Trade Dollar

1878-S Trade Dollar. It has a gash on her face.

XF details either cleaned or enviro damage. Just looks odd.

Easy, I would wait for TDN to show up and then ask him. (I can't decide if it has a weak strike or if it's fake.)

I want to look at the edges and see if they say "MADE IN CHINA."

Dark, but it looks like it may be original. Extremely similar color to this 1877 XF-45 I recently had which is as original as they come. Gash on the face? You're worrying about minutia. If that coin is not retoned or fake I think it's great.

  • Nice!

It's just a guess but I would say MS63. Nice strike and surfaces. the "rub" on the breast feathers might limit the grade I feel.

I wish it had a chop mark. There are only three MS 78-S chopped Trades graded by PCGS and the top two are MS62's. I think the regular 78-S in MS are also an over looked scarcity.

It looks like a nice AU coin to me (I'll say AU-55). Is there any luster left under the gray haze? If not, knock it down a few points. I have a French Indochina piastre that looks ugly on scans because of the thick brown-gray toning, but in hand it shows lots of luster. I wonder if your coin is like that.

  • I'd say it looks like about AU50 or so.
Could be XF too, depends on the wear on the eagle and Ms Liberty's arm, etc.

Remarkably similar to your coin Tonelover.

As far as color and luster go, the lighter part is tan colored and there is no luster on top of the color, yet in the sunlight I can see through it in spots and it looks like there is some luster under there as well as possilby some pretty toning.

Agreed, when I saw your picture I had to do a double take. I had the 1877 in my hand just two days ago so it was very fresh in my mind.

It looks like a proof strike to me... that or just really hammered...

Not a proof strike, but definitely a real good strike.

It looks like there is more wear under the toning than I thought. I'll say AU50 if it still has luster.

Honestly, it's not very pretty. It appears to have some sort of environmental damage or coating applied to it.

As far as details go, it's AU58 all day long.

  • Yes, it's very very ugly. You don't want that one. image

You should sell it to me now.imageimageimage

It's very much like the one Tonelover posted. I have seen pics of them being tan colored with darker accents. No coating on it. It's just dark. You are right, it isn't very pretty, but I liked the strike and the local coin dealer said no one else liked it either, so he sold it to me for less. Thank you all for your input.

    Au 55 is my grade...Mike

edited to add: I would take that coin in a second over a dipped MS 63/64.

From a wear and detail standpoint it's AU58, but because it does not have any luster it's most likely a 53 or 55. I really don't like it either, but maybe NCS could do something about all the crud on the surface.
