Have you ever had some or all of your collection stolen?

It happened to me when I was in my late twenties. I had a Capital Holder with all 35 Frankies in it, most of which were circulation finds from when I was a kid. However, I had a proof 1953 half (do not remember if it was brilliant or CAM), an MS 1954D or S and a few other MS coins from the early 60's. I was renting a room from a college friend of mine and had the Frankies in my bedroom. My roomie and I went out to referee some rec league basketball games in the morning and we were gone about 4-5 hours. Upon our return we found that the house had been burglarized. The Frankies were gone. I was very angry but never got the coins back. A 6-7 year old neighbor kid said he saw some grungy looking teenagers walking out of the house with stuff. My roomie and I looked through the neighborhood but had no luck.

How about you?

No. 90% of my coins are stored in the bank.

    Not me.

No one would want my measling $4K collection image They'd have more luck robbing a bank.

Edit: Even if someone stole my collection, they'd have to spend capped dies, broadstrikes, and double struck coins image

honestly... my collection is not really worthy of stealing. The risk in getting caught outways the value of my collection, I'm sure.

  • YES, in 1966 while i was in viet nam.
my coins were stored at my in-laws house.
My silver dollars and some of my proof sets came up missing.
I think my wifes little brothers may have sold them.

About 90% of my childhood collection was stolen when I was about 10. A lady with a realtor license had lock box keys and would go around to houses that were for sale and burglerize them.

    That's really sad, especially to a 10 year-old. image

  • My brother stole my collection when I was around 10 so that he could by a few joints (pot) ..........So the Indian Head Pennies were worth one cent, Buffalo nickels were worth 5 cents....well you get the idea. I was probably only about $5 or $10 bucks but at face value....that's a lot of coins image

    Myself no.

A good friend of mine had the whole core of his collection ripped off. The thief took only his good stuff so it appeared that the person knew what he/she was doing. After that happened the friend just gave up collecting. The 14D Lincoln that I got a opinion on about 2 monthe ago here was one of the coins he had left. Now he has a 14D VF20 Lincoln in a PCGS slab. Before 2 months ago he did not know what a PCGS slab was.

Yes, my original collection was stolen from my parents' house when I was in graduate school. That made me take a good number of years off before I decided to return to collecting. Naturally, my approach was better the second time around, though I avoided a lot of things like early US copper that were in my original collection. More importantly, my coins don't just sit in the house this time around.
