Have you ever had a friend, acquaintance, co-worker, etc. decline to................

........... show you a coin or a coin album that they mention to you that they have?

I have had this happen a few times. Once a husband and wife that my wife and I are good friends with mentioned that they had gone to a local garage sale and bought a completed Dansco Album of IKE dollars. Why they mentioned the acquisition I do not know. They did not know I am a collector. They mentioned it while my wife and I were visiting their home. I told them I was a collector and asked if I could look at the Dansco Album. They seemed uncomfortable with my request and declined to show the album to me. They said that they would have to hunt for the album in their home and did not want to spend the time looking for it. I got the hint and dropped my request immediately.

Have any of you experienced the above?

Yeah, I think a lot of people with little knowledge of coins think that the only reason you could possibly be interested in seeing them is to try to pressure them into selling at far below value.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

I can't think of any situation in particular, but it has happened to me.. it's definatly an uncomfortable feeling... almost like they think youre going to try and rip them off, even if you have no intent to purchase.

Or they were lying about it.... I was having a discussion at work about the 1913 Liberty Nickel and this guy(who lies all the time) comes up and says he's got TWO of them... From that point on I started to make up coins to see if he owned those as well image

Hey wait a minute, you already did show me a part of your collection since I have looked at pics of your 1957 Proof Set coins on the registry.

I brought 10 rolls of nickels over to my bosses house while they were gone. Their oldest daughter is my age, and a good friend. Anyway her boyfriend was there and I started searching though these rolls. He left, and returned with about 3 dollars face of silver quarters. He asked if I would see if they were anything. I wrote down the years and mint, graded them quickly, and left when I was done with my nickels. I returned to tell him they were really only worth about melt, as they were common worn dates.

A few days later I still had the list laying on my desk at home and noticed one of them was like a 47 something.. and it was one that I didn't have. So the next time I saw him, I offered him 4 bucks, being a little generous, and he replied that he had lost them all. Something was a little fishy when I went back to my bosses house that day, and they were still on the table image

  • That's happened to me on several occasions. Most recently I had a coworker claim that she had a silver dollar dated 1794 but never brought it in. However, I'm sure that if it were dated 1794 it had a large "COPY" somewhere on the reverse. Either that, or she meant it was dated 1894 or 1974.
