Does a collection have to be both rare AND valuable to interest you?

With silver going thru the $10.00 mark today I was thinking about the value of my numismatic publisher medal collection. A large percentage of the medals in that collection are silver but to say that it repesents a thinly collected specialty is an understatement. I have been working on the collection for twenty years and doubt that one like it could ever be assembled today as many of the medals are rare...though not particularly valuable since few people care.

Do you care about collections that are rare but not particularly valuable or is value what really matters to you?

    Not in the least.

I could care less about value, and only slightly more about rarity. A nicely matched AU set of Jefferson nickels can and is something to be proud of even though it is neither expensive nor rare.

Personally, I care the most about eye appeal versus rarity or value.

I would love to see your medal collection. I would also love to see TDN's Trade Dollars. Cool stuff is always a pleasure to view. Monatary value means nothing to me.

I do like rare and valuable, but you gotta like what you are collecting. One of my favorite lincolns is a 1913 MS62 that I paid about $20 for.

honestly, when I add something to my collection, I don't ever consider the cost once it's been added. I bought it once, I don't need to know how valuable my collection is. I do like to know what I could get for each coin, but the collection as a whole doesnt even cross my mind.

I probably have less than 30 oz of silver in my collection, and no gold, so the value of a coin in my collection depends solely on rarity(which doesnt say much for my collection) . I did pick up an 84 O 5 VAM which is a R6.. image

No, but it must be rare to interest me.

I, too, could not care less. While it would be great to see a very wealthy guy's collection of highly valueable rareties, I would be just as interested to see the coins that a very poor numismatist has pulled from circulation through the years. What matters to me is that it is a true "collection" which a collector has worked to put together. I greatly dislike Ebay lots where a dealer is selling a bunch of odds and ends as a collection.

They don't have to necessarily be rare or valuable. Usually it's the passion of the collector
that either comes through in his description of it, or the collection itself which gets the most
attention. A million dollar collection of salt and pepper shakers would bore me to tears if
the collector just spent the money and didn't really know what he had, but even the oddest
collections are fascinating when presented by someone who knows the whats and whys.

Both rare and valuable, and common and inexpensive.

As for value, I really couldn't care less. I don't have a clue as to the monetary value of my collection. Why should I care since it isn't for sale anyway?

I am attracted to rarity, though. And by rarity I don't mean rarity based on grade. It doesn't matter a bit to me if a coin is a POP1 none higher at either TGP if it is available in large numbers 1 or 2 grades lower. To me that coin isn't rare; only the lable is.

On the other hand, I am even more attracted to passion about one's collection then I am rarity or value.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I'd say it doesn't have to be rare or valuable for it to be of interest. Just interesting is all.
