Ripken F**k Face "Error" card ???

I have heard so many stories about this card being genuine or not, and about whether or not it was a true "error" card. I'm very surprised to see a graded version of it with "FF Error" right there in PSA's description. So does this confirm it being a real card, not a hoax, and a true error card?

  • I think that just confirms how psa chooses to designate it.

As far as I know, that card is a true error card. I thought so since 1989. Never heard an other stories about it being a fake.

  • Do you know then who was responsible for the "corrected" versions of it? I've seen it with the saying covered by a black box, and with it poorly airbrushed out. Was that Topps?

NO it is a FLEER card.

I have never thought of those cards being ERROR cards, but simply variations.
    Good for you.

    RIGHT!

And as I know about it, the rubbed out version was FLEER's early correction before the sheet was corrected.

I always considered them variations, because there has to be 7-10 different variations on the card, including some whiteouts, I believe blue ink scribble, a 1/4 inch cut up the card etc.

Does anyone remember the error card craze in the late 80s to early 90s?

Many people were very skeptical of the manufacturers at the time - the prevaling thought, if I remember, was that many thought they "purposely" created them to sell cards.

I have only seen a few corrected cards - the FF is the original - missed by the editors - so in that sense it's an error - the first corrected copy was the "white out" and then the final copy was the "black box" which is probably a better "correction" on the print plate. I know nothing about this for sure.

The vintage error cards are truly appreciated by collectors. I think most modern error cards went the way of Pogs and Beanie Babies?

  • Error cards confuse me a little as to their "value". I would think them to be more valuable since they can be lower population cards and also because they are often unique. I have a few of myself ('69 Topps Mantle/name in yellow,'55 Bowman Milt Bolling/name on back Frank Bolling, '99 Donruss John Smoltz/Glavine pictured, to name a few) and think they're really cool !!!
So was there a point in the modern collecting era when these cards became "black sheep", and frowned upon by collectors thus reducing their "value"?

  • that sellers feedback score of 96.9% is pretty low.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • Way back in 1989/90 that Ripken card was selling for $20 raw. There was a huge craze to find the error card in every issue. In 1991 or so, the UD Ryan card was modified after he won his 300th game. The later version had a banner across the top corner. Of course there was the "regular" and the "error" and both were commanding HIGH DOLLARS. We were really NUTS at the height of this.
The 1991 Frank Thomas UD, there was a question as to whether or not he was making an obscene jesture, it was the pose where he was sitting in the dughout and holding a bat. The question was what he was implying with his hand positioning on the bat.
We were finding COMMIES on every block.
It was the McCarthy Hearings of the card collectors hobby.

I believe from a previous thread, it was reported that there are actually closer to a dozen variations of the Ripken card.

Fleer had a field day with the variations in 1989... Randy Johnson has at least 5 or 6 different variations also, they blacked out that billboard in many stages with several different color variations on his cards.
  • RedHeart54RedHeart54 Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭
As I recall there were even two versions of the "scribble" variation: one with a "loop" (on the left side of the "scribble"); one without. There were several variations of the "cut" versions but I think several were proved to be faked.

Man, that was the error of the decade- if not of all time. It started selling for $100-150 when first discovered and packs were, what, $5 or $6 apiece for a while? That and the UD Murphy error more or less defined card collecting in 1989.
  • Every colection needs one. It's a must.

I have seen all versions except for the white box. The toughest of them all.
  • Someone keyed in on it earlier--there are so many variations it's not even funny--I believe the whiteout box has a large and small version, as does the blackout box.

All right! I've never seen or heard of this correction before! I've got to see if I happen to have either one.

Always a fun thread talking about the errors and corrections over the years. I always seem to find another new one...

The black scribble has over 3 versions made. I only mention 3 as I need the others still. Loop, Loop Lite(airbrushed off) and Line or F showing.
Saw Cuts were made in over 5 versions. FF,Loop,Line,Double Die,Airbrush and others that I still need. Yes easily faked. I have airbrush and FF on top of unopened rack. Beckett mentioned/Pictured some saw cut versions in past but they are easily replicated so value is minimal unless found showing on unopened material. And left unopened. No reputable company grades FF saw cuts except for GAI (Global) I have a extra if anyones interested. There is another version that can easily be replicated and if found on unopened material Do NOt Open it as my 3 year old could make one. Honestly. You will know what it is if you ever see one. I only have seen pics. Sorry I will not share as I dont want to see 100 on ebay tomorrow. I want to buy a real one.
White Box- ?? Myth or real. Heard from many different sources including in mags its real but no one has one or a picture. I found white box looking card from ad in 1990 and got to know owner of ad and he said it was a FF card that was censored by mag.

Some agree with you. I have talked to two collectors who say they have showing on unopened cello. Pic not avail as it was not clear they say. Heard only avail. in cello. Id only buy if in the almost tamperproof rack pack. I have attatched a pic from PSA a few posts up. I also have another PSA whiteout pic as well as a BGS copy. Heard a few rumors of how it was made but nothing solid. Heard only 1 or 2 sheets were printed of them. I think they do exist as there are many other rare versions that exist but rarely seen. Fleer had printing done at a print shop in Colorado and it is unknown to me what versions came from where. The scribbles were apparently caused by employees scratching plate until it was ruined then they created new plate for the Black Box. There are at least 2 versions of Black Box as well. What a adventure this card has been.

So are those the errors, the corrected versions, one of each, or what? I'm not familiar with this particular error...

  • The incorrect one is an "error" the corrected version is considered a "corrected error card".

So much for my theory about there being no white-out version. I DO remember an ad a few years back that there was about ten different versions (in SCD I think). I was always skepticle about there being that many. This sounds like a pure attempt by Fleer to make more money by producing that many versions. I mean, what was the point? They should have blacked it out and that would have been good enough, right? Or change the photo!

The one on the left with the infielder crotch grabbing is considered the 'error'. Score got embarrassed and (wanting to join the error craze and sell more cards) blocked out the arm on the infielder. The corrected version I think is about as common as the 'error'

On a side note--I know of Topps/UD/Fleer and Score errors from 1989. Are there any Donruss errors? Or was Donruss actually clean that year?

  • If I remember correctly, wasn't there supposed to have been 2 versions of the black scribble card. One had a loop or some such variation on it. I only managed 3 of the different cards. I have the FF, the black scribble, and the black box. never could find a white out. This was in '89.

Edited to add: In an earlier post on this same thread, I said I wouldn't pay the price in '89 for the card. In this post I said I couldn't find one. Whatever the case I never got one of the whiteout cards.

    Theres more.
Some unconfirmed, if even legit versions or maybe just a printing or ink flaw. Then there are others that I do not have in hand yet. I do not mention these as I do not want any more competition. Plus some of the unconfirmed not in hand versions can easily be replicated so my mention of them would result in 20+ fakes pop up on ebay tomorrow.
