ZAR Coins

Hi All,

I am new to PCGS and am looking forward to getting some of my ZAR collection slabbed once I receive my membership pack.

In the meantime a few questions:

What is the Darkside that people keep refering to here ?

Also I'm aiming to complete the ZAR set ( both silver & gold ) except for the proof pieces and the Veldpond. Could someone please give me some good advice as to where I can pick up reasonable prices pieces as I have very little numismatic activity in my area and the bay seems over priced.

Thanks,

Promise I'll post a few piccies soon once I learn how everything works here.

Darkside - coins and currency that are not from the US. Originally meant US paper money too.

Greyside - a sub heading of darkside. Canadian coins and currency.

  • Hi Ajaan,

Thanks - you are making me a wiser man already. image)

Just for the record I'd just like to say that I'm also collecting Eliasberg coins and Dutch 'Rijksdaalders'.

Please let me know if there is any of the above on your books people ( that goes for high quality ZAR as well ).

    Fun hobby. image

ZAR = Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek - Republic of South Africa

This was a short-lived republic established in the 1850s that was ultimately absorbed into the British Empire near the turn of the century. ZAR coins are the issues from that era, limited to dates 1892-1900. Those more knowledgeable than I can correct that off the cuff info.

Hi and welcome to the Darkside. Do you live in South Africa?

If yes, I have a question: is paypal still operating over there?

  • Unfortunately I don't live in South Africa otherwise I would like to meet up with Scott Balson when he's there. I think that he's planning a trip this year. So I'm not sure if Paypal still operates there, sorry. image

Thanks for the welcome BTW. image

Lovely people and country! Northern or Republic?

I've been to Derry on business a few times and wish I could be transferred there.

It's a Proof Commemorative coin from Holland marking the wedding of Prince William Alexander to Maxima Zorreguieta.

    Fingers crossed.

  • Well, flippin' 'eck - my files all seem to be over 50kb long, no matter how much I trim them back !!

    Very frustrating. image

Will try some more tomorrow night.....
  • I collect South Africa and a few ZAR coins - I have the 4 coin copper set 92, 93, 94 and 98, plus a silver type set from the 3D thru the half-crown (don't have the crown yet as I haven't found the right one when the funds were available). I also don't have the gold as gold is way over budget for me.

  • The Penny's are nice - all you need now is the Kaalpenny. I'm doing my best to get my hands on one at the moment !

There's a Double Shaft Crown on Ebay with 4 days left bidding is already up to $650. I'll concentrate on the Penny though.

Are any of your ZARs slabbed.

A slabbed penny MS64 ( i think ) recently went one Ebay for $530. image
  • Almost none of my foreign coins are slabbed - if I come to the point of selling them, I might slab some of the more expensive ones, but for right now, none of the coins are going anywhere so I don't bother with getting them slabbed. I'm not that interested in grades as long as the coins have the 'look' that fits in with my set.

I would love a double shaft crown, but the hard choice would be figuring out which of my kids to sell to pay for it (that and explaining to the better half what happened to the kid... image )

BTW The Crown is now going for 650 Euros !!
  • the last double shaft I saw went for a low 4 figure price (on ebay)...

  • Lived up in FNQ for a while, mostly in Townsville but got all around.

Living up there spoiled fishing for me, it was a question of what you wanted to keep.

Can't do the actual waiting for bites anymore.
