New Acquisitions, Feb. 1-2 (Lotsa Pics)

Bunch of new stuff in the last 2 days. Some cheap, some not so much. All fairly cool...

First, a pair of dark coppers I bought from Dimitri. Whattaguy!

Switzerland 2 Rappen, PCGS MS66BN. The toning is actually a bit more subtle than in the pics he had posted, but it's a gorgeous piece nonetheless.

Great Britain Halfpenny, 1855. NGC MS65BN. This one is considerably nicer than the photos imply. Now that it's in hand, it's a good thing this coin is encapsulated, because you could slice your fingers open on the strike. image It is the sharpest strike I've seen on any Victorian copper... almost prooflike in its sharpness. The surfaces are pristine; I'm thinking that it's only the hit at Vicky's temple keeping it from a 66...

My local dealer and I went to the Illini basketball game last weekend (pounded Purdue quite nicely... but then again, who hasn't?), and we spent some time chatting about the toning craze. I asked him if he had any toners in amongst his Indians or Lincolns, and he said that he might have a few toned Indians, so I dropped by yesterday and went through his stock. I picked up the two below; not the most even toning in the world, and may be AT, but the coloring is wild and the prices were cheap (folks off the street get Redbook/Coin World pricing; longtime regulars usually get to buy at Graysheet bid).

Indian penny, 1905. I had a dickens of a time trying to capture this one. What appear to be spots and splotches in the pictures are actually bronze/orange areas of toning that reflect the light differently. It's much nicer looking than the pictures...

Indian penny, 1901. The reverse on this one is to die for!

imageimage

And finally, my dealer had said I should probably check through the foreign melt, as the higher silver price was bringing some better material out of the woodwork and people were dumping. He was right. Not just ultralow grade classic material or modern chud, but some decent pieces with profit potential... my usual sucky silver photography notwithstanding. image

Switzerland 1 Franc, 1936.

imageimage

Switzerland 1/2 Franc, 1921.

imageimage

Haiti 10 Centimes, 1886. This one is really neat! Someone has turned this coin into a spoon bowl or a button or something. The date is mostly obfuscated by a solder point, but other than that the coin has been turned into a perfect bowl without damaging it... I'd love to know how that was done.

imageimage

Canada 25 Cents, 1874H. Nice VG/F example. For melt? Heck yeah.

imageimage

Cuba 10 Centavos, 1915. Lovely VF/XF piece. Still has lustre.

imageimage

Chile 1 Peso, 1872. I just love these big bird pieces!

imageimage

And lastly...

Cuba 1 Peso, 1915. Whoah! Nice problem free coin, close to an XF in my book. Not a cheap coin either.

My dad has his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Purdue. My brother has his M.S. from Purdue, and my uncle has his B.S. and M.S. from Purdue. Let's talk about the women's team . . .

Nice coins. The Canuck 25c is probably worth $8-10 or so.

My dad also has a B.S. degree, and a Master of the Same degree, plus a Piled Higher and Deeper degree......but not from Purdue.

Oh, nice Swiss piece there! And nice score on the Canook quarter.

That halfpenny is the pick of the litter, but the Swissie is sweet, too! They're all fun.

I agree that the Canadian Vickie quarter for melt was a no-brainer. Almost worthy of a "you suck", in fact. How'd you pull that off?

That halfpenny looks familiar. It's one of the best I've had and it was one of the toughest to let go.

Dealer just doesn't have the time or inclination to go through all the melt. S'ok, I'm more than happy to do it for him. image

Interesting, several people have commented on the Canadian quarter, but no one has mentioned the Cuban peso, which I think is the steal of the bunch...

Funny, I didn't notice that was a peso when scrolling down the pics. Had no reference for the scale- it could've been a 20-centavo or whatever. Cool.

The spots are unfortunate, but fiddle-dee-dee. Nice grab.

Nice coins; I particularly like the 1855 halfpenny.

Congratulations on the Peso if that's the kind of coin you like. I too like large silver coins; they're majestic. However, I simply can't get excited about a dipped out, cleaned, hairlined, "dead" lustred and spotted coin; to me, it's very far from "problem free", and it grates on my eyes to look at, but I'm happy for you that you were able to pick up something you like!

Mkay... methinks you need more bran in your diet. image

Must be a case of the coin looking better in hand than the pics. It doesn't look dipped to me (it's not as bright in hand as the pics imply; as I mentioned I'm not as good at shooting silver as I am copper), and well of course there's not going to be a lot of lustre as it's not close to UNC (or even AU for that matter). I guess the spots don't bother me nearly as much as they bother others. Would I accept them in an UNC coin? No, but this was hauled out of a melt bag for about $7 fer chrissake.

*shrug* To each their own, but damn, lighten up man...

Coinpictures, I'm really sorry if I offended you; that wasn't at all my purpose. I merely wished to impart some constructive assessment, as you requested. Personally, I have a deep aversion to harshly cleaned coins (hairlines), but for $7, how can you go wrong?! Nice pick up, I say!
