Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Not how sure that this is the correct place for this but...

I'm looking for some advice. I haven't been here in awhile but hello to everyone that remembers me image. I'll try to make this long story as short as possible, here goes. Tonight I had bought a box of SPa football(I know, eww, modern!) and I got a pretty nice card. Got home and posted my break on beckett message boards. About 20 minutes later I get an instant message on AOL saying hey I want to buy the card etc etc. I didn't think about it long and said sure, if you pay paypal. The guy pays. I then get instant messages from numberous people stating that the guy who I had sold it to is a HUGE scammer on beckett and ebay. I'm not going to list any names btw, just looking for advice. So I instant message the guy back and hes not around. I then go into my paypal, refund him his money, leave him a message that it was refunded. A guy I know logs onto aim and he says hes interested, so I sell it to him. Heres where the story gets "weird". I get a message from the first buyer(the scammer) alittle while later, saying basically "I'm going to hurt you, kill you, etc etc blah blah". I'm like ok, tell him go for what he knows. Then maybe 5-10 minutes later, I get a call...ya I know. Its the guy. He proceeds to tell me hes going to kill me, murder me etc and that if I call the cops hes going to have someone else do it(this guy is 31 btw, not a kid). So, he hangs up, after some choice words on both sides. Comes back on aol and starts up again, then calls me again..hangs up. Calls a 3rd time alittle more calm but basically saying the same thing. He then leaves me a message on aol stating that hes going to "get me" and have no mercy on me. I'm thinking to myself the whole time, this guy is a nutcase. Well after I finally calm down and come to my senses I call the police(the idiot didnt block his # when he called and I had his address from the paypal payment I refunded). They make a report but basically thats all they can do. Before anyone says I might have done anything wrong, I actually made alittle less money selling it to the guy I know. Who wants to sell to a known scammer? And btw this guy lives in Iowa, I live in New Mexico. Any suggestions of what I can do beyond what I already have? Thanks,

Ryan

    Seriously?

It's hard to know how to deal with a nutjob.

If he continues to harass you, it might not be a bad idea to ask the police if the FBI can be involved since it involves another state?

Sorry to hear about this - PM me if you get the chance and let's talk.

  • I'm sorta surprised that the cops didn't take more interest if the guy wrote to you using the word "kill."

If the guy paid via Paypal, then why not just send him the card. Is there a way he could have pulled the funds out after you have sent the card? But as far as physical threats, that is out of hand. Did you call his local police or your? Did you leave him some type of justification on why you were refunding his money? Hopefully this guy is just full of $hit and is not going to go postal over some piece of cardboard. I would not take this too seriously, IMO.

Try contacting his local police department, since the call started from their jurisdiction. Or, if you really want to pursue it, you could contact the FBI (terroristic threats over interstate lines). Did you save your AOL conversations? Emails from the guy? They will need those as evidence.

    Good luck!

  • The guy did ask to buy the card, you should sure, but pay via paypal---he did. I do not know why you didn't send the card? He did everything you asked him to do. However, threatening e-mails (not rumor or words of others) are a serious matter and should be forwarded to authorities.

Too bad it's not an Ebay transaction because I think you could leave him a negative feedback for making death threats! image

Seriously though, I would follow up with police and FBI. It's 99.999999% sure he isn't driving down to New Mexico but maybe if enough people complain the authorities will take action!?

    Good luck to you!

Buy one of these and then tell him to come on over.

I've dealt with a few nutjobs before. Make it clear to him that you can be even nuttier if pushed and would put him on slab if he came around.

I have to say that I am doubting this story. If you file a police report about someone giving you multiple death threats they are not going to simply file a report. You should file a restraining order against him as well. After the software guy who turned up dead following some negatives on eBay you have to take this seriously. I would recomend taking steps in your personal protection aswell.

    That is terrible advice.

I recently had a similar situation with an eBay member I bought from and I left him negatives. I was threatening me in the same manner. You should forward any of his e-mails to his ISP in addition to anything else. Block him on your AIM and do not return any of his e-mails or calls. He likely will stop if you don't respond. Good luck.

I didn't say he should discount all the other suggestions and not take all the necessary legal and procedural actions in this matter. All I'm saying it that he should not give this creep any impression of fear or comfort in regards to what he's doing. Sure, make all the necessary reports and go through all the necessary routes, but in the end, make it clear that if he (the creep) wants a war, expect a real fight.

that is terroristic threatening. i had a roommate in college that never paid rent and i told him i was going to kick him out. he left me a letter telling me he was going to cut me up and hide my body in the woods (verbatim). i told the police and showed them the letter and they told me this was "terroristic threatening" b/c he was verbally saying he was going to "harm" me and this also shows INTENT the #1 thing a panel of jurors must decide in any court case.

i would call the police, take screen shots of his threats, the phone calls can be traced and document things accordingly.

of course if you're not telling us the truth and you're seeking some gay sympathy, then ignore my advice 100%

seriously, get this 15 year old chick to kick his arse.. http://www.herald.ns.ca/AftUpdate/9000538.html

Teenage girl turns tables on attackers

    By The Canadian Press
Two guys picked the wrong 15-year-old girl to try to rob Monday night.

The teenager was walking on a Dartmouth street when the men tried to yank her knapsack off her back -- and police said that's when it all went wrong for the suspects.

The girl is skilled in martial arts. Police said she knocked one of her attackers to the ground with a hard punch to the face, and then kicked the other in the groin and punched him.

    Police said the men fled.

The girl told police she may have dislocated the second man's shoulder or elbow.

The suspects are described as between 17 and 18 years old.

Would you deal with/perhaps help a known scammer with a higher end modern card that he's probably going to try to scam people with? That was my reasoning behind refunding his money. And yes I told him I knew who he was(he has a banned beckett account/ebay account for scamming btw, just found that out) and that I didn't feel comfortable selling him the card. I called his police department, they said to call mine which I did. The officer I talked to said that he filed a report and that he could call the guy but I told him lets leave things be for the time being, unless he calls me again of course.

I saved the convo on AIM but was unable to record the call because I obviously had no clue who was calling me the first time and the next times I guess I just didnt think about it.

I didn't sell the card to him because I found out who he is/what hes done in the past. Would you sell to a known scammer if he had the chance not to? Maybe I'm alone in not doing that, but I refuse to help the scammer out in anyway.

Doubt it if you will. The police officer I spoke to said he could call the guy but beyond that there was nothing he could do(unless he calls back). I told him to leave it alone unless he does callback or actually does show up at my house. Thanks for the tips, appriciated.

I believe the story since Orion has no reason to make any of this up. He's been here a while. As far as this guy goes, I doubt he really has the desire or the means to act on any of his threats. If you're a known scammer, you most likely have some serious behavioral issues, and while this is probably towards the extreme end of the scale, it's reasonable to believe that this kind of person could make those kinds of threats. Acting on them is a different story alotgther. Have you mentioned this on the BMB?

I haven't brought this up there because I know he reads the boards(trying to buy cards to scam others with). If you'd like I can pm you his nick on there mud..then you can read the multiple threads on him scamming people and a few others where hes threatened others(to beat them up atleast).

I doubt he's going to come after you.

What I WOULD be worried about is that he'll create a new ebay account and screw around with your auctions. I've had that happen a few times with ebay psychos. Do any of your posts at beckett indicate your ebay id?

Sudden thought - if he does come after you, I've got a 220 lb cousin in Iowa with no job and a huge arsenal. Hmmmmm..........

In most States whenever you use a Phone,Computer or any other mechanical means of sending threatening messages to others it is a crime of aggravated harassment. The police who took your report in his home state acted properly if in fact you decide not to pursue it further and in most cases like this where typically your dealing with a immature moron who hides behind his phone/computer and knows full well that your not taking a ride to his location then that phone call that you said a officer said he would make to him is usually enough to straighten out most of these cowards. If you get further grief from this idiot make sure you save copies of whatever he sent and re-notify the authorities if he persists . good luck.

They weren't quite anoyomous emails, they were messages from 3 people I know and have traded/bought/sold to, 1 being someone I consider a good friend though we only talk online.
