Eep! You don't stumble across these very often!

Just got a call from my local dealer who said he had something I might be interested in, so I zipped on over. He was right... Even though it's not a perfect specimen, these seem to come around so infrequently, I decided to pick it up. It's now the most expensive coin in my collection; I'll be paying it off over the next few months. image

I looked up some online prices for mint state examples, and there's no way I could afford one, so this will have to do.

I make it EF40 detail, but unfortunately it's been cleaned. It's a shame too, since there's some evidence of previous colorful toning.

Krause gives the mintage as 19,000 pieces. Price - F: $450, VF: $850, XF: $1,250, UNC: $2,500. As you can see, even low-grade pieces don't come cheap. I'm into it for basically a hair over F money, so that should make up for the cleaning.

One of those tougher countries to pick up...

Indeed! Even I knew that! image

The rare and elusive Askari Yeti would approve, I believe.

  • Nice find, looks pretty nice to me, so many coins of the era were cleaned... image
  • Ironically, saying how it is not too common, I have seen 10 examples at one stage at a coin fair here offered by several dealers. Of course they aren't too cheap, but there is wide range of them. Well done! image

Harasha, have you any idea why the beading around your coin is so uneven? Is it some unusual variety, or perhaps a counterfeit? I

I've put it in an older brown paper coin envelope. Hopefully over the course of time it will retone a bit. Not trying to deceive anyone, just trying to get it to not be so bright and perhaps recapture some of the underlying toning. Having never attempted to tone/retone coins before, where is the best place to put said envelope? I've read posts here recommending direct sunlight, as well as environments with changing humidity (bathroom, near water heater, etc.)

I absolutely do NOT want to attempt any quick-fix cooking/baking/heating/blowtorching/nuclear fallout methods of toning... image

It is my understanding that the coin had been used as a pin. Someone removed the mounting, and for some reason punched in beads, for consistency, I guess.

  • I saw a couple of these in slabs at the NYINC last week. Absolutely awesome coins and much lovelier when seen in person.

    Good pickup....image

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to recall grades and prices? Just about all the prices I've found online for any of these have been over $1,000 regardless of grade (granted most are mint state).
