*growl* Need photography help...

This is driving me nuts. Coppers I have down pat. No problems there. However, circulated silver/nickel with any amount of lustre is driving me NUTS. The pictures all come out looking like the coins are beat to hell and back. All the flaws are accentuated... the pictures look far worse than the coins in hand. The most minor of surface tics, bagmarks, or scuffs come off as huge gouges. I look at the pictures and say "Well, sh*t! I wouldn't buy this at any price..."
What should I be doing differently?

That is how I took these two, and sometimes the background color can make a difference, both of these coins are Cu but the one with the black back ground is a little gold in color..
You can see by the shadowing at the bottom of the image where the light is coming from,
