  • I really like that one, and now I wonder how I missed it.

I guess I need to look closer at the catalog next time.

Simple and beautiful - can you supply a little more info on the coin?

  • I don't know a lot about it yet. The looks are what really caught my eye. It's an Egyptian 1999 50 pound gold commemorative. To me, it has a less commercial look than some of the other figures in the series although they are all very nice with the same type of elegant simplicity.

The King is Rameses (I)? It looks to be about the size of a half ounce eagle but for the price I paid, $230 with the juice and shipping, I figured it had to be a quarter onzer.

The lighting I used for the pics was bit lacking but it is a nice bright deep cameo gold.

It's in an NGC PF69 UCAM holder, for now at least.

Maybe someone has a later editition Krause than I have could shed some light?

Last I checked Hosni Mubarak was still alive, to the dismay of many of his subjects. imageimage

  • I think it may have been the emir of Kuwait that just pasted away but I don't recall his name?

When I first looked at the Arab inscription it reminded me of Kuwait City for some reason.

Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, the emir of Kuwait, died Sunday.

The inscription on the coin reads: "Goumhouriyat Misr al-Arabiya," or the Arab Republic of Egypt, hence the initials A.R.E.

The ARE led me to believe that somehow it was a United Arab Emirates coin. image And BTW,I think two emirs passed away recently, (the second in a $5K per day resort in Australia) and as far as Mubarak is concerned, his days are numbered from what I hear from some subjects on location. image

Two of the Emirati emirs have died in the past year or so -- the guy you mentioned was the emir of Dubai, who was off buying racehorses in Australia. Apparently he was one of the big players in the horse racing world, because they were all crying the blues when he died.

As for Mubarak, my contacts hate his guts, but hate the Ikhwan al-Muslimeen a lot worse. Some of them even get nice coins for me. image

I'd pass away too if I were paying for a $5000 per day resort. I'd advise trying a hostel next time....no, not that one!!image
