Darkside Predictions for '06

Somebody started a similar thread on the liteside, so I thought some darkside predictions might be in order. Feel free to add your own.

1. Darkside prices will rise, albeit moderately, as the non-rich litesiders begin to see the appeal and relative value of darkside coins.

2. Cacheman publishes the definitive guide to Goetz.

3. The PCGS Canadian registry sets continue to gain in popularity.

4. The trend of very high end British coins hitting the auction block wanes as the supply of such rare coins is exhausted and the coins disappear for another generation (the same thing may happen for Canadian as well).

5. Newfoundland coinage very slowly starts getting its due as its true scarcity begins to be appreciated.

6. Condors continue to rise in popularity, and price. Canadian bank tokens follow suit.

7. French and French Colonial coinage rises dramatically in value as folks realize how many people are collecting this stuff and demand takes over.

8. Some Canadian registry set owner publishes a book on Canadian large cents.

9. The TPG's will finally realize the potential of slabbing world coins and actually cater to the darkside crowd.

10. Marty will move on to something other than weenie coins.

Theme collecting will continue to grow and the popularity of Victoria medals increases(hope,hope,hope)

Selfishness aside, Medals will continue to be the place to go for Beauty, Variety and Value. They are much lower in mintage, generally better condition to virtually any coins, and the Histoical moment is right there in your hand.

Take it from someone who has collected everything , light and dark, for 30 years

Just some comments to the comments:

I agree that the supply of British will likely dry up shortly. What is interesting is to look at the pop reports from NGC... EITHER no collectors bother to submit these coins or the survival of high grade pre-1751 British coinage is truly rare.

Canadian Halfs and Quarters George V and earlier are tough in high grade (Original EF and higher). I think we all know that... what will be interesting is whether the HIGH grade George VI coinage does well (MS 65 AND HIGHER).

French colonies and French coins in general are tough but I am wondering when the collector base for these coins will become more apparent...

I think this will be so. They have shown a lot of movement in the Canadian Trends lately. It's amazing how low the mintages are on these coins.

Not going to happen IMO. Just look at what ANACS did. Guaranteed turned around times for US coins are quicker than World coins, with the same fee for both.

Conders maybe, but Condors, being a type of vulture, will continue to be under appreciated.

PCGS will create a Swiss Registry set.

I will fight for number one in the type set category if they do.

More and more nice Greek collections that were built over years will hit the auction block due to the very high prices of this market.

Not mine.

There's a chance that I will experience an intense collecting highlight in January, the likes of which appear 2-3 times max in the life of a collector.

After I cancel a few more planed trips, I'll finally do one to the US and meet many Darksiders in person.

1. I will reduce further my British coin holdings in favor of concentrating on Farthings, Halfpennies, Sixpences and Shillings.

2. Availability of quality Victorian material continues to plummet.

3. Spinaker will have to wait much, much longer for "the good stuff."

4. Aethelred will become more enthralled with Victorian coinage and will operate under a new alt of "Albert."

5. MacCrimmon will fib about being "as poor as a church mouse" - again!!

6. Avarel will post to this forum at least three times in 2006.

7. Askari will return.

8. Crownman will not return.

9. GCL will come back yet again.

10. Henry will leave Arsenal for Barcelona and Ajaan will become a Chelsea supporter for at least for two games. Meanwhile, wybrit will do the even more unlikely thing: root for Arsenal against Real Madrid.

That's enough for now...

2006 prediction:

Oreville attends the 2006 NYINC show. Will be buying some more Canadian and Newfoundland coins in 2006.

Newfoundland's scarcity is no secret at all!
