  • Wow, thats pretty mushy! I don't even know what to guess with a strike like that... 65?image

According to PCGS grading standards, a better than average strike is required for a grade of 65 or better. That leaves me to guess MS64.

Is the strike that weak, or is there something on the holder that is blocking the view? It looks like a 64 based on the strike.

I'm rather suprised at the grade, while it does have a weak strike it has nice fields.I would call it a MS-63 if raw,67 if it wasn't for the weak strike. Maybe PCGS didn't have room for the date on the slab?image

The spot of carbon on the obverse has to knock it down one grade at least, this being a modern and all, agreed?
I think it strange that PCGS would cite the reason for it being 62. Unusual for them...it almost sounds like they owed an explanation.

that would be toning @9 o'clock..................are toning and carbon spot the same thing??

Thats a toning spot on the obverse, not a carbon spot.

I have never seen a ASE struck that softly...I like it. PCGS graded it a MS62 due totally to the soft strike. imho That coin looks super clean other wise.

I have seen some pretty beat up ASE's but never have I seen a grade this low. It's kind of a cool effect with the weak strike and yet there is no damage to the fields.

    Interesting Catch.
  • Neat coin, looks like it is still concave in the center of the reverse. I had a buffal nickel like that. Mint State but very weakly struck so that te edges of the devices were struck up higher than the central areas.

They put the "weak strike" on it because they listed it as a mint error. If they has not called it a mint error, they wouldn't have put the weak strike on it.
  • Thaat was my thought also. Submitted as mint error perhaps wanted it labeled "die adjustment strike".
  • If that is a stuck-thru area on the rising sun, there may be more going on here than just a weak strike.
