Two nice Greek coppers

1833 is the most common date for Greek coinage of the King Otto period 1832-1862, and the most likely to find red examples at reasonable prices. So when these two beauties were offered to me,I didn't hesitate for a second, despite the fact that I have long finished this set. You can never have enough red Greek coppers. image

How many dates of those coppers exist during the Otto period? Is it possible to complete one with all denoms and all dates in at least nice AU condition?

    BTW, very nice, D.image

Yes it is, at least theoretically, it is possible to complete this set even in (mostly brown) mint state. The problem is the price and extreme rarity of most of these pieces and unlike silver , these copper coins (1 lepton, 2 lepta, 5 lepta and 10 lepta) have been minted continuously from 1832 to 1851 with very few exceptions, plus a final date of 1857 that is among the most common. And yet, a 5L of that final date in red BU sold for around $2500-$3000 in the latest Kuenker auction. In reality, every single copper denomination from that era except 1833 is in excess of $1000 in mint state, sometimes even in AU.You can always multiply the Krause prices by 5 or more in unc for these. Most collectors try to have a complete run of them, in grades according to their means; it was my initial intention as well when I joined the Darkside and I was already well on my way, until I realized that I had become very unwilling to spend a small fortune for each of these coins, just because they were rare dates. I wasn't taking any pleasure from looking at them due to their very average quality and the competition from fellow collectors had become unhealthy by my standards. So I decided to go for a type set and concentrate on the best possible quality instead (definetely a Darkside influence here after seeing so many nice coins by various members) and I still believe that this was one of my wisest decisions ever, I immediately felt totally liberated. I begun to sell the ones I already had, except the ones in red BU, mostly rare dates in choice AU or low end mint state, and the proceeds of these sales have been funding my coin collecting hobby for the past two years, I don't think I have invested new money in it ever since, even if I count Switzerland and other non Greek projects I undertook that would have been impossible if I was still trapped in that complete date run idea. What a bore!

It's a personal choice, most Greek collectors disagree with me. This is why I have the luxury to buy dupes and triples of nice 1833 ones without caring about other key or semi key dates. Sorry for the small rant, but this unexpected question gave me the posibility to post (once again) my collecting philosophy of the past 2-3 years.
