Ok, Serious discussion about the USC/TX game in the Rose Bowl

I may have just missed it, but is anyone one talking about the fact that for USC, playing in the ROSE BOWL is basically just another Home Game? That should be an advantage, right?

any other advantages or disadvantages either way?

    USC advantages:

    2 heisman trophy winners
2 national titles (much less nervousness - they've won the big game already)
Peter Carroll with a month to prepare is unbeatable
Matt Leinart 37-1 as a starter

In a sense it is just another home game, but I'm guessing that the distribution of tickets will only be slightly in USC's favor. As for other factors, there's obviously going to be tremendous talent in the game for both sides, but I think USC has an edge on the sidelines. Another plus for the Trojans is their turnover differential. I'm not overconfident by any means, but I like our chances.

For bowl games stadium is split 50/50 and you can beat your life that texas will bring a TON of people just like last year.

I think the schools only get about half of the total number of tickets in the Rose Bowl. I had an e-mail from the alumni association that had the breakdown, but have since deleted it. A lot of tickets go to the Tournament of Roses people and there's a ton of other organizations that get at least a small chunk of tix. By virtue of proximity, I reckon USC will have the slight edge in fandom, but, like you said, there will be a sh*tload of Texas fans there. Hopefully they go home utterly dejected.

  • Texas is going into the game with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Everybody is picking USC to win. So if they lose no big deal they were suppose to lose. I think it will be a better game than most people think. It's not just Leinart and Bush they have another good back in LenDale White.
Here is the break down of Rose Bowl Tickets

    Rose Bowl Tickets
    • 92,000 Rose Bowl seats
    • 4,100 seats off-limits because of obstructed views, disabled seating, media work space
    • 88,000 total tickets
    • 22,000 tickets to USC
    • 22,000 tickets to Texas
    • 6,200 tickets to sponsors, media, game officials, others
    • 6,000 to the Pacific-10 Conference (USC)
    • 1,000 to the Big Ten Conference, the traditional Pac-10 Rose Bowl rival
    • 5,000 to Tournament of Roses ticket partners, The Ticket Reserve and PrimeSport
    • 1,000 to a conference pre-sale to fans last October
    • 1,000 available on Ticketmaster
    • 500 to Pasadena residents
    • 23,300 held by the Tournament of Roses and its 935 members
    Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!!! image
  • I am confused. Doesnt USC play all their home games in the Rose Bowl Stadium during the year? I thought they did.

  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
No, they play at the LA Coliseum, which is just a few blocks from the USC campus.

And thanks, daddy. Those were the numbers I was thinking of. However, I haven't noticed an overwhelming belief that USC is going to win. A lot of the internet polls I've seen on espn.com and the like are running within a few percentage points of 50-50.

  • Unless I am just forgetful (which I am), I don't recall USC facing a dual-threat QB all season.

USC's offense is scary good, but I just don't see their defense containing Young and Co. His ability to scramble and create plays is going to be the difference.

Call me crazy, but I don't believe Bush will be getting the ridiculous rushing yards he's been piling up lately. Texas has a much better defense than they get credit for, and will certainly be the best defense USC has faced all season.

With all respect to USC, their run ends at the Rose Bowl.....

    Texas 41, USC 38.

I believe USC will shut the ground game down and force Young to beat them through the air.

    Final result..........................USC 52-Texas 17

I would love for Texas to win IMO it will not happen though.

Hopefully the game will be as good as everyone hopes it will be. Both teams are outstanding.

However, a much more important and equally competitive contest will be taking place in the Rose Bowl at the same time as the football game is being played,......................................................................... specifically the battle between the "So. Cal. Beach Babe" USC Cheerleaders ("Like Totally") and the "Miss America contestant" Texas Cheerleaders ("How Y'all Doin"). I simply am unable to choose which cheerleaders are better.

Who gets your vote for the better cheerleaders?
  • I've never been a Mack Brown fan...I don't think Texas is as well-coached or as well-balanced as USC. I do not see how 1 player (Young) can beat a team like USC. Texas has a pretty good defense, but they've been shaky at times. This one will not be close.

But USC has more than just Bush who can win games (namely White and Leinart).

This game isn't going to be close, and hopefully people who have been dissing USC all year will finally give them the credit they deserve.

UCLA has played their home games at the Rosebowl since the mid to late '80's. There was a time when both UCLA and USC played their home games at the Collesium. Been to both stadiums that have a very rich tradition.

do you really think that the USC defense (specifically their secondary if Young is throwing) is that good? I have been hearing a lot of chatter that the one place USC is weak (or at least the weakest of their strengths) is on D.

    ?
  • carrol will have a month to gameplan.

    USC wins

    54

    Texas 19

Carrol Calls off the dogs in the 3rd quarter. Vince young gets a td in 4th..

The argument that was laid out was that Young cannot beat USC singlehandedly, which is true. The point I was making was that Bush has singlehandedly saved games for USC against teams far weaker than Texas. Without Bush, they lose to Fresno State, and against UCLA, Leinart got off to a terrible start, but Bush carried them.

If the USC offense is not balanced against Texas, running and passing, they are going to be in trouble. Let's not forget, Texas has two outstanding safeties.

None of this is meant disrespectfully against USC, but Texas is by far the best and most complete team that USC will have faced, and at times USC has struggled mightily against lesser opposition.

True, w/o Bush USC loses to Fresno but w/o Leinart they probably lose to ND ... not an overall great performance by Leinart but it was a gutsy call at the end.

ND is as complete a team as Texas in my opinion.

USC is going to get off to a big lead with quick touchdowns and time consuming drives. I can see a 21-0 lead at one point in the first half and a final of 47-20.

Notre Dame's is nowhere near the caliber of Texas. They have been unable to stop anybody all season; they've just outscored them.

Speaking of ND, without Bush pushing Leinart across the goalline, ND wins that game.

The only concern I would have if I were a Texas fan is Mack Brown's record in big games. But he's put a lot of his skeletons to rest this season. There's something different about this year's team.

I hear all this talk about how USC hasn't played anyone near Texas's range on defense.

But who has Texas played that's anywhere near the quality of USC on offense? I mean honestly, look at Texas' schedule. And don't tell me Ohio State even sniffs USC offensively.

USC is going to light up Texas - I see Vince Young, being behind early, trying to do too much and giving up picks and making bad decisions.

Giving Carroll a month to prepare - you'll see results *just* like what happened to OK last year - a blowout.

But it was Leinart that led them on the final drive, I think he was 2-2 on 4th down ...

Texas is no doubt a great team who really hasn't played anyone except Ohio State - a team ND is gonna stomp on.

I think the UCLA offense is good and the USC defense did an exceptional job in a huge cross-town rivalry. I think the USC defense has had its moments of... well, questionable games, including ND and Fresno State, but the Texas offense did not look that impressive against Ohio State... sure they won, but that game could have gone either way. I think my point is simply this... don't underestimate the USC defense... seriously.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Talk about a lack of respect! Is it being implied that the USC defense is as good as the Ohio State defense? Very few teams looked impressive against the Buckeye D. Sure, OSU's offense struggled at times, but so did the Trojans vaunted offense.

No way ND is as complete as Texas. People are giving them too much credit because they played well against USC, but plenty of teams played well against USC. Besides, what noteworthy teams did ND beat? They only beat three teams with winning records, and one of them was Navy. Their defense is swiss cheese, they can't stop anybody. I do think they landed an excellent coach, and are going to return to prominence, but they are way overrated this year.

There are teams more deserving than ND of a Fiesta Bowl bid. They will wish they were playing Navy or Stanford. OSU wins 31-21.

Funny, but who did Texas beat? I mean they beat ohio state early in the season, then they play a ton of cupcakes all year long.

Add in Pete Carroll's uncanny ability to gameplan, giving him a month to come up with a plan to decimate Texas, and this one will be a laugher, just like last years, cementing this USC team among the finest to ever take the field (certainly the best offense EVER).

  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
    34-24 Texas.
  • First off, I think that USC has not faced an offense this good, USC has given up:

    28 points to Arizona
    31 points to ND
    24 points to Washington
    42 points to Fresno State

You are not going to tell me that these are all better teams than Texas??

As far as defense goes, this team is as good as USC maybe even a little better... I think it's going to be a closer game than most people think.

Also as far as this being the best team ever or the best offense ever - I think the 2001 Hurricanes was probably better and more determined.

  • Texas has given up plenty of points to teams far less talented on offense than USC, so they seem pretty evenly matched

  • << <i>Texas has given up plenty of points to teams far less talented on offense than USC, so they seem pretty evenly matched >>

Who have they given up plenty of points to? The most points they have surrendered was 29, which was Texas A&M. UT's defense has been much more consistent than USC's, and their offense can score just as many points.

Axtell, neither team has faced a gauntlet of quality teams, but at least UT played at Ohio State, which provides a window into just how good they are. OSU's beatdown of Notre Dame provides a window into how good OSU is.

All this talk about USC being the greatest team ever is just stupid. Sure, they have a superb offense, but their defense is very suspect. They are far from a complete team.

Personally, I don't really care who wins the game, but Texas is a more complete team this season.

The ohio state team that beat ND is nowhere near the same team that UT beat...even the most ardent UT fan would have to give that up.

  • Where's the Pope? Did he get bammed??
  • I've flip-flopped on this game for a while... I do not think the game will be a USC blowout. I actually think the game will be tied or even Texas leading at halftime, but Carroll is great at making halftime adjustments, which should make for a great finish.
  • .....just thought I'd jump-in with my pick for tonite's game - Texas over USC 31-28.

  • I too will take the Longhorns 38-31

yes. GoBravesGo was kicked from the forum!

  • Texas 1st half ml - booya!!

The game is considered a 50/50 from here. Texas up 6, but USC a comeback team; should be one helluva finish.
