This GAI "first graded" idea was the dumbest idea since the square wheel.

No, really. Explain the concept, the reasoning behind why anyone would want this? To avoid cards that haven't been graded that many times? Isn't there 10 or so "First Graded" labeled for each grade? That's what, 200 first graded cards? Is that meaningful in any way?

At least when they started, "1st graded" was for the first of that card they graded. "1st issue" I think included the first 10 of that card that had been graded.

I don't think it ever gives added value. Does it? I have a Ripken rc and a Griffey RC that 1st graded and I didn't think it had any added value.

For each grade & subgrade there is one "1st Graded" designation. So a GAI 9 and a GAI 10, and everything in-between, would all have a single "1st Graded" counterpart. It is a dumb idea IMO as well, but I have seen people ask for premiums on come cards with that designation.

The reason PSA is so much more successful than the other so-called card graders is because PSA is the ONLY company with TRAINED and LICENSED, CERTIFIED graders! They don't have to give phoney "first graded" designations on their flips to market to suckers buying their slabs. With PSA, they're the only company that puts each and EVERY card through a rigorous examination for trimming, color touch and three seperate graders who much come to a consensus before assigning a grade. Every card that gets encapsulated in a PSA holder has received 25 minutes or so of careful, detailed examination!!

The jokers "across the street," you'll be lucky to get some stiff they found with ZERO professional grading card experience (often times, a bag boy at a grocery store or something like that) grading your cards! They spend maybe 10 seconds looking at your card.

    NOT AT PSA THOUGH!

That's why PSA has over TEN MILLION cards graded since they opened their doors! While they're busy grading cards, the other wanna-bes are coming up with silly tricks to fool card collectors like coming up with "first graded."

That's why PSA is the #1 grader when it comes to 19th century cards to pre-war cards and why it's the leader in top prices realized for modern and everything in between, you know. Because collectors are smart and recognize PSA is the best.

I don't think it is bashing the company, besides DBH who bashes everything non PSA, but questioning the idea of the 1st graded.

I think these type of discussions are acceptable and warranted in a sports card forum. JMO

DaBig- How can this be possible? They are highly trained but can collectively review a card for 25 minutes? At $5/card (which I all ever pay as I only get grades during the specials) they would really lose a lot of money becuase I imagine these highly trained people make what, $15/20 an hour? Or more since they are such experts!? Thus, at 25 minutes they would be losing money, no? Even at $10/hour they would about break even and obviously since they are such experts and highly trained they make more than the average Burger King worker!? I am confused by your statements as they do not make sense.

Actually Dabig is wrong. each card is allowed 21 minutes. 4 minutes was shaved off in a cost cutting move last year.

Dabig please make note of this for future info.
