Ace 250; A 9-year-old's Xmas gift?

I am thinking about getting my son a Garret’s Ace 250 for Christmas. He is only nine years old, but likes going with me when I go MDing. He gets bored pretty quickly, but I have never let him try my MXT. I think if he had his own he would really like going with me.

Do you think nine years old is too young for a metal detector? I am concerned about him getting frustrated with pinpointing and other skills one must learn. I have never held an Ace 250; are they heavy?

What do y’all think?

No, not at all. I sure wish I started at that age. I missed out on a lot.

If I were you, I'd go with a white's Prizm series instead. They're even more user friendly than the Aces, but just as, if more, reliable. I've got one (Prizm III) that I would never get rid of for my life. It's so good. I love it! It's light weight (2.5 lbs.), easy to use, and as I mentioned, very reliable. I've never had a problem with it for the year I had it. The only thing was when It kept sounding off in one particular area even when I raised it in the air, but then I realized that was where my cesspool was, and a metal fence.imageimageimageimage. The next thing I'm going to do is hunt with metal tipped hiking boots!image.
    Happy Hunting!image
  • Thanks, you guys. I’m not married to the Ace 250, I’ve just heard that it is a good multi-feature detector. I’ll look into the Prism III. My detector is a White’s, and I like it.

I know that I’ll have to work with him and I think he will be excited about it.

My nephew bought an Ace 250 last spring and yes he did get frustrated with it but he didn't have anyone with him to help.(He dosen't live close) I think that would make all the difference As for the weight I held it once and it I don't think the average 9 yr old would have any problem swingin' it hour a couple hours.
  • Naw that's not too young.

JUST HOPE YOU DON'T MIND YOUR YARD GETTING DUG UP ALOT!!!
