I am thinking about getting my son a Garret’s Ace 250 for Christmas. He is only nine years old, but likes going with me when I go MDing. He gets bored pretty quickly, but I have never let him try my MXT. I think if he had his own he would really like going with me.
Do you think nine years old is too young for a metal detector? I am concerned about him getting frustrated with pinpointing and other skills one must learn. I have never held an Ace 250; are they heavy?
What do y’all think?

No, not at all. I sure wish I started at that age. I missed out on a lot.
If I were you, I'd go with a white's Prizm series instead. They're even more user friendly than the Aces, but just as, if more, reliable. I've got one (Prizm III) that I would never get rid of for my life. It's so good. I love it! It's light weight (2.5 lbs.), easy to use, and as I mentioned, very reliable. I've never had a problem with it for the year I had it. The only thing was when It kept sounding off in one particular area even when I raised it in the air, but then I realized that was where my cesspool was, and a metal fence.. The next thing I'm going to do is hunt with metal tipped hiking boots!.
I know that I’ll have to work with him and I think he will be excited about it.
JUST HOPE YOU DON'T MIND YOUR YARD GETTING DUG UP ALOT!!!
I already did that ...
