What is the liklihood of more complete sets being sold to individual collectors?

The recent sale of The Las Vegas collection of toned commems, to an individual- is this a sign of things to come?

The Bruce Scher set of 3CN was bought by Legends.

TDN has purchased several complete sets of Seated dollars.

Which series are likely to be bought outright, even if it may mean the outlay of several million dollars?

Are the collecting days of one coin at a time over, at least for some high end coins?

Your thoughts?

It happens more than you know - they just aren't all publicized.

    Dale,

I sold my $5 Indian set intact and plan to do so someday with my other two sets.....I feel it is a better way to go, at least for me....

I have sold all but one of my sets as a complete set. A very good complete set is the best way to get the best coins at the best price.

I sold my number 1 silver Roosie set as a complete set. I've noticed that the sets that sell
as a complete set are superior sets.

Your replies are heartening, if it means keeping a complete set together for longer periods of time.

Next, what would be the best venue for marketing complete sets? How did you come across the buyer(s), and if a seller, how did you market your set?

While not for sale at this time, JP indicates his will be sold intact. Set out the advantages of a complete set sale.

I don't think it would be better, Dale...Im'm not adamant about it, but I would think that the sum of the parts would be greater than the whole in my case. Prhaps a #1 set would be able to do better, but I have always felt that competitive buyers are much more beneficial than a single captive buyer.

  • I have sold several complete sets intact over the years, as well as my large collection of finest known and high grade shield nickel varieties. The latter group was very interesting, over 40 coins, including many rarities. I was very pleased to place that group intact, as the effort to assemble the coins and get them attributed and holdered correctly was great, and the group as a whole forms a valuable reference collection. The buyer was none other than Dave Bowers, who will plate many of the coins in his upcoming Red Book of Nickels. He is also keeping the group together for his personal collection. Needless to say, I was very honored that he thought my efforts were worth preserving !!!

I would have bought the Scher 3CN set if Laura hadn't told me right before the sale that she wanted it badly. I was actually planning to buy it.

Dale, if you're asking these questions, I have to assume you are contemplating how to sell some of your amazing sets someday?

Be sure to call me !!!!! image

I will have to agree with Saintguru. Many collectors have allready invested much time and a lot of money working on their un- completed sets.
If they purchased your set intact, they would still be left with coins that they would have to sell.
Saintguru made a good point about many bidders competing, as opposed to one buyer, or a few buyers that are looking to buy at a discount.
