He didn't bat left, the negative is reversed. (Look at the number 4 on his jersey). Although he always batted on the right side, I did read in his book and for a long before playing pro ball he batted right handed but held the bat with his left hand above his right hand (opposite of how it should be). He believes this actually helped him have one of the quickest and strongest wrists in baseball.
