A 1940 Playball #1 Joe DiMaggio for $1,050.00 many years ago. It would have graded at least a 7 maybe an 8.
Also a 1969 Brooks Robinson that was so sharp PSA would have graded it an 11. Yes it was that nice.

Where do I start? Oh ok which card just one. Sad though it may seem, it is NOT VINTAGE~~

1982 topps traded ripken. This card honestly looked like the printer had hit it twice!!! The dark blue of the outfield, the green of the grass was incredible!!!! It would have been, a PSA 11. I consigned it through a local card shop that went out of business. I drove to the owner's house to harrass him, and he gave me 50 bucks. Mind you this was 14 eyars ago, it still sucked. A close second was my jordan rookie, same deal but retailed it for 450 bucks. I doubled my money in a week!.

I auctioned-off a 1955 Topps #124 Harmon Hillebrew rookie card PSA 9. It was perfect! I think I paid $600 for it from the "Strike Zone", years ago. The card was auctioned-off for me by Superior for, I think around $2000, I thought it was a great deal then! Now SMR is over $5000, and I honestly believe that card could actually grade PSA 10 today.

Plus, there were many other cards I wish I never sold!

Here are three examples of "killer gems" that hurt, when I sold: image

1961 Fleer #47 Wilt Chamberlain IA PSA 10
    1976 Topps #75 Terry Bradshaw PSA 10
1961 Topps #44 Chicago Black Hawks PSA 10

edit: P.S. Actually, I wish I kept every card I've ever sold! image

OK, this is going to be the sign of the true neurotic....

I have given things away but have never sold anything that I collected for myself. I did a little selling in the early 90s with my son but none of it was from my collection.

I am a packrat - OCD collector - in love with his stuff and could not part with it - in fact...bury the stuff with me! image

None, actually. When I collected from 1970-1990, I never bought any good cards in great condition (except for the 80s junk). Even with all of the buying and selling the past couple of years, I haven't sold anything for substantially less than market value.

Mike, I'm the same way. I've got several duplicate 10's of various 1993 Refractors and can't bring myself to sell any of them. Anything I buy, I won't sell. I'm neurotic too. image

It's a close heat between the '63 Rose and '68 Ryan rookies I had doubles of. Like an idiot I traded the better-conditioned card in each case so I could get the tougher '62 Topps cards I needed. I have a written record someplace of all those trades. I should look back and see if what I got in return was worth it in today's market. One of the cards I received is the '62T Mantle I recently sent in for grading as part of my free six-card sub:

Any guesses what this might come back as?? A PSA 5 or 6 on a good day??

My old Bird/Johnson rookie. Would have graded a PSA 9 if I still had it today. Most of my best cards in the day were stolen, but this particular one was sold by me and I've regreted it since.
  • When I was just a young boy an older kid offered me this Indian Head Penny if I gave him my shoe box of 69, 70 and 71 Topps cards. It wasn't full, but had probably 100 cards or more? I'm certain I had some nice stars in that box? Kind of rotten of the older kid telling me this Indian Head Penny was worth a lot of money? Anyway, I still have the penny and it's worth close to $2.00 today image When I collected the 73, 74, and 75 cards I was old enough to know better, but I will always wonder what I gave away in that shoe box image

  • in 1987, while in college...I was dealing with a dealer here in MA....selling off cards every weekend that I came home for spending $$$....
well..it got to the point where he owed me more than he could produce....and "twisted" my arm into taking a 1980-81 Topps Basketball wax case for $100....to knock the total down a little. Basketball at that time was JUNK......the only reason I took it was for the Birds......and if you remember back that far....who in 1987 wanted those stupid "panel" cards..that were inpossible to put a set together becasue of the numbers.......lol

Well....I showed him!!!! In the srping of 1989....JUST in time for my senoir year spring break.....I opened SCD and low and behold...there was a buy add for $900!!!! Wham, GONE.....free trip...lots of booze and sun....and good times....

In 1989 I was on top of the world....laughed the whole way to the bank.....

    I showed them huh!!!??!!!

  • I have sold a bunch of cards over the last year that I wish I still had...
My 53 color Bowman Mantle (PSA 4) - bought cheap
56 topps Mantle (PSA 6) - bought raw and submitted to PSA

I'm sure I won't be able to get them again at those prices.

Back in the early 90s, from 90-92, I was collecting 52 and 54 commons, buying them to hold for a while, must had dozen of each, before grading was the in thing, sold them all to some local card shop some time in 92, do not remember pricing. All would have been 8s, I believe.

My collection of 80's Gretzky cards.. Sold them all but the OPC rookie.. The topps one would have been a 9 for sure maybe a 10 even sold it for just $300. They all would have graded quite high. Disgusted with myself for selling them. I had just moved out and was a little overwhelmed with some un-thought of expenses.

I had about 50 1955 Bowman football that must have gone from the pack into sleeves before I got them which was in the late 80's. They sat dormant on a shelf for 10+ years until I got back into the hobby and discovered this thing called eBay which some of you may have heard of. Anywhoo, I didn't want to start buying but just wanted this stuff, or crap as my mother called it, out of my parents basement. So I went down there and started listing stuff left and right. I didn't have a scanner. Let me say that again, I DIDN'T HAVE A SCANNER! But I figured might as well list some of the stuff that could bring in some money if I had to get rid of the 100's of 1000's cards. I described them all accurately and listed them indivdually and when I tell you they had a strong chance of 9, they were sure fire 8's. I sold off all the good ones; Gifford, Summerall, Conerly, Matson, Ameche, Pihos, Van Brocklin, Perry... I got a few bucks for each. Of the lesser quality ones I kept I had PSA 8 Giffords and a PSA 8 McCormack. After I got those grades back, nearly 1 year after selling off the rest of 55 Bowman's I was smoewhat bothered. Partially that I made someone else more than a few $$, but more so because I kept one of each of the cards that I sold in the hopes to one day complete the set. If I could go back I would have kept the ones I though were best eye appeal and sold off the other stuff.

I still want to complete that set but right now doing it in 8's is too pricey and too tough. Well, at least my mom didn't toss them and told me she wanted them out of her house. There still are 1000's of cards there but I have nowhere to put them and she finally realized that they are valuable and I have nowhere to put them in a 2 bed condo in the city.

All of them. But the one in particular is the Ryan rookie I sold for $30 in 1985. It'd be just about my most valuable card if I still had it, but even without the monetary value, it'd be worth the most to me. I loved Nolan Ryan when I was a kid, though somehow I stopped when he became a God. I just liked a guy who could lead the league in strikeouts AND walks. And I remember watching his 5th no-hitter on TV in 1981.
