1982 Topps "blackless"

Hello,
I know that this topic has been dicussed before but I can't recall what sheets were included and which sheets are the most difficult to find?
Thanks,
Jason

I saw this, too, in this month's SMR. I never heard of these before, what's the difference between these and the regular issue?

If I recall, the "blackless" version does not have the facsimlie autograph on the front.

Sheets A, B, and C were printed with no (or very little) black ink. It was rumored that Sheet C was more difficult to find, but with the recent influx of sheet C cards into the market, that's now a bit more debateable. Sheets A and B were primarily found on the east coast (NY) and Sheet C cards were primarily found in Michigan.

Difference between the "Blackless" cards and normal '82 Topps is simple. Fronts of blackless cards have no black ink. For all of the cards, that means no facsimile autograph and no black line surrounding the photograph. On others (like the McBride shown below), the position is also blank.

I just noticed that PSA has listed Blackless cards in the 1982 population report. I have sent in two different Blackless cards and requested they be labled as such and neither came back with the "blackless" label. Is anyone aware of any player sets with Blackless cards included in addition to the regular 1982 Topps cards? I have several mislabled cards from various PSA submissions that I think I will send in and include the blackless cards and see if they will change the labels.

  • Too bad Topps didn't do all their '82 cards 'blackless', as I think they look better without the fake autograph getting in the way of the picture. Maybe it is just me, but without the Henderson autograph in the way, that shot looks so much better. That is an all-time classic baseball card shot in my opinion.

I'd like to have a Henderson..

  • I believe PSA has on occasion labeled the 82 Topps blackless as blackless but not all the time. For my personal collection I choose another grading company for oddball and test cards. I just wanted them protected and properly labeled, the grade was of little concern. Shown here are some bad scans of an 82 Topps Blackless and 1990 Donruss Aqueous Test.

I just couldn't pass up the Blackless version of a player whose name I share!

You could probably convince Bob to give you his Henderson.

Bob and I both thought we had a complete set, but now one seller claims there are two "variations" in this variation set.

Sorry about that. I was going to say that # 2 ( Ken Forsch )will soon follow; no doubt at a similar reserve. The 3 1980 Yellows the same seller has up are tough ones too. The Stanley is the better know, but these are just as tough.

I took a look at the blackless variation being offered on eBay, but I have to disagree with seller's assessment of it as a variation. I think it is nothing more than a print registration problem or a factor print smudge. I have owned blackless cards that have had a faint blackish line appearing across the top edge of the player photo, but would not consider that any sort of variation. On top of that, how many blackless Dan Spillner cards are there to even compare to determine such a variation? Obviously, the seller owns at least 2, but that's certainly not enough to form any sort of conclusion. I would think that in order for it to be considered a true variation, someone would need to be sight multiple examples of the variation. In my opinion, the card being sold for $195 is worth the same as the one being sold for $25.

What do you think Al and Bob?

    Ditto what you said.
  • Thanks everyone for your input. I saw the one on ebay this morning and it got me thinking about this set. I agree with Josh and Bob that it shouldn't be considered a seperate var.

Bob could you pm or email me a list of the cards in the set. I have a 82 set, just feelin lazy about looking at the backs of all those cards.

    Thanks,
    Jason

If you're going to search your set for them, might as well just go through it in order because the cards from sheets A, B & C are not in any sort of numerical order. Just look for the black border around the outer edge of the player picture and you'll be able to breeze right through them.
  • Josh,
I wasn't going to search my set for them, I know that I don't have any. I was looking for alist of cards that are on the A, B, C sheets.

OT- Picked up a couple of ven's from dave tonight. Looks like he got new stock.

  • The 1982 Topps seem to be full of print errors. Look at this one with no name or position:

    Josh

I agree they are not true variations, just print defects ( as are all the Blackless cards); but to my way of thinking, that is true of my Herrer and Bakep "variations" as well....and the 80 Yellows. I do not think any of these were errors Topps interntionaly corrected in latter runs, like the 59 option/traded cards or the 52 Sain/Page. But, since they have been listed as variations, there is a market for them. Maybe the seller is just ahead of his time. ( light years maybe) . Maybe it just depends on your definition of a variation, as opposed to an error. A subject for another day, I guess.

What's the story on the 1990 Donruss Aqueous test set?

  • Bob,
    Thanks,
For posting a list. I looked at my Splinner card in my 82 set (Not Blackless) it has the same double printed apperance.

Does this mean I have the super ultra rare Blackless, then reprinted with black double print!!! j/k

I see that he also listed some 1980 Topps Yellow Name cards. I have the Stanley, but never heard about the others. how many 1980 yellow name cards are there?

I thought that there were three.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Wow, this guy must have had an orgasm in 1989 when they fixed the Bill Ripken card using 50 different variations.

Is this the same seller that was selling 78s variations with the red stiching on the ball, that has the position in it? He shows a blown up picture of each card showing the difference, I think it is just the way the cards were printed and not a variation.

I collect 1969 Topps and don't think that Sparky Lyle card is a recognized error card.

That looks like a PD more than anything else...

most of his cards would qualify as print defects rather than error cards IMHO!

Aso, the 80 yellows were mentioned in this thread. I have been able to find 4 yellows in the 80 set...Stanley(387), Wathan ( 547), Braun ( 9) and Poquette, ( 597) plus one no name...Pryor (164). I have been told by the person I bought my Stanley from that McEnaney ( 563) can also be found in yellow, but have not seen it

I notice that the seller is not telling you exactly which cards you will be getting. You get the one card pictured plus 9 others of their choosing.

I can say I have bought C cards from this seller myself without problem. In fact, he was the key for me completing the set. But I gave him a list of what I needed. Another seller, zenithium, was recently offfering lots of 50 B and C cards for $ 895. I assume the only people interested in such lots would be those wanting to get started on a set

Wondering if anyone knows of this as being a true variation (2nd p in "Topps" filled in) or perhaps if its just a false image caused by the software processing the scanned image? Saw this on a current Ebay auction.

Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.
