I just dug up what I bought for '91 Topps and found 2 800-count boxes. I sure don't remember pulling any vintage cards, either. I didn't seem to have saved any unopened stuff from that year. I'm sure I've got a wrapper in my binder. I'll have to see if they printed any odds of a pull.
Yup, 1:1,000 were the odds. I was on the road for work a lot that year, so I didn't get to compare notes with anyone and don't remember anyone saying they'd won.
I posted in the 2005 Topps FB thread that, in 11 racks I opened, I got 33 1986 Topps cards with 6 of one common card!! Hopefully the 40th Anniversary had a better selection...
I wonder if any vintage Topps cards were distributed in the Desert Storm packs. I would think if so they would comman huge $$ with a legit stamp. Maybe a fantasy, but I am wondering if they exsist.
1991 was when I got back into cards and I love that set. There was a box at the local show last weekend for $10 and I nearly bought it, but decided to be frugal.
I remember hearing from dealers who broke case after case and found no vintage cards. I think they were about 1:5 cases. And the 1952-1956 cards were redemptions. I also recall that the complete 40-set run was won and the winner sold the whole thing for about $50K.

heck....anyone open this years football rack packs??? 3 vintage cards per rack.... I opened a rack....3 of the SAME 1981 football COMMONS.....bad enough getting 81 football....but the same 3 commons....cummon Topps...get it together....
I remember a friend in college who had some cards. I wasn't collecting much back then (mid 90s), but I figured I knew enough to tell him if he had anything good when he asked me to look at his binder. Everything was from 1985 through 1991 (with quite a few 90 and 91 cards), except for a 1960 Topps Mays / Rigney "Master & Mentor". I asked him where he got that card, and he didn't know. All he knew was that it was Willy Mays, and that his dad said that Willy Mays was someone good.
I wonder if he just got really lucky in a trade, or if he may have landed one of those vintage cards from 1991 and didn't know it.
I opened 8 boxes. No vintage cards. I know a couple people who did get vintage cards, but none was in any way special - late 70s and '80s commons.
I had better luck with the 2003 inserted vintage - I pulled a 1989 Gary Carter Record Breaker Topps Vintage Buyback (with embossment) in 2003 from a jumbo pack, and bought a (creased) 1978 Carew Topps Vintage buyback for a buck from Burbank Sportscards.

I opened about 10 boxes that year. On the 8th or 9th box I pulled a 1977 Jerry Remy. Very disappointing.
