Hey everyone,
I posted these newps a few months back and I just received them from PCGS (Thanks to Jon Rosenthal at RCHN!).
I am quite happy with the grades!
1903-S 10 Centavo - PCGS AU58, MS would be nice, but I'll live with it

1903 Proof 20 Centavo - PCGS PR63

Thanks for looking!!!

Picked up this 05-S half at auction recently. Getting opinions ranging from 50 to 62. What do you think? Will let you know what NGC says in a few weeks.
The 1905-s looks to be high end AU... but could go MS... I would rather see that one first.

Ecos, congrats on the grades. Beautiful coins!!!
I know Justhavingfun will chime in before too long, because he simply can't ignore a thread with "Philippines" in the title.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
You know ... I have the "best ever" Registry Sets for Standing Liberty Quarters. Ditto for Shield and Jefferson Nickels. My Roosies top the leader-board here. But my heart's with the US-Philippines. What can I say, eh?
Dear Matt:
Congratulations on a great score on that 1903-S 10 centavo. Like we discussed before, this is the lynch-pin of the 10 centavo series. It's extremely hard in high grade; extremely expensive (for a US Philippine), and you gobbled up an extreme beaut -- one of the nicest I've ever seen, for a piddling amount.
If it weren't for the cabinet friction on the obverse, it would probably go for MS63 or 64. But even in a PCGS AU 58 holder, you've probably multiplied your money 50 times over.
Hi Mr. Filam Coins: Welcome to the Forum.
That 05-S 50 centavo is a nice looker. I'd have to check my records, but I think I was the underbidder on that coin. By proxy of course, since I wasn't in Manila for the auction. How will it grade? I'll check in along with Shirohniichan and Jester, at AU 55 with a shot at 58, and if I remember correctly, a shot of coming back in a body bag if you don't take care of the pvc first.
See ya next week! Another late night coin session after work?
Best wishes,
Just Having Fun

Hey Mr. Fun, sounds good. See you then. I should have kept that 50c for you to look at before sending to NGC. Oh well. Next time
Safe travels!
By the way, picked up my first Peso Proof at the Goldberg auction earlier this week (also by proxy of course)
FilamCoins, those are very nice coins. I love the 04 Proof!!! I would have to agree with JHF on the grade for your 50c.
Justhavingfun, thanks for all of your encouragement. Without your initial comments I may have never bough these coins. THANK YOU!
coinkat, what is the grade on that peso you posted? It looks very nice!
That's a dazzling peso proof. A beautiful start to your proof collection.
But don't rest on you laurels. Start looking now for the proof half-centavos and centavos. Those are actually the hardest to find in really tip-top condition. Some of the dates -- especially the 1905 and 08 are murderously hard in red.
Changing subjects, I'll send you an e-mail when I arrive at the hotel. Right now, any evening except Sunday and Wednesday work for me. But let's set up something quickly, because my calendar usually fills up quickly. If I have the time to get the safety deposit box before I fly out, I'll bring some extra special coins for you to enjoy.
One last point: I'd really, really be appreciative if you'd walk me through the steps of posting pictures on the threads here. My IT Dept in America has deciphered the code and does it for me, but I hate to drag them away from their work to help with my hobby.
Dear Ecos: Thank you!
And how did you ever create that logo? That is beautiful! You obviously took it from your 03-S; but how did you ever get from the one to the other?!
Warm regards,
Just Having Fun
One of the coins they showed me was a beautiful, darkly toned 1903-S 10 centavo that looked remarkably similar to yours, and condition-wise was like a twin sister. The only visible differences to me were that your coin had more hair detail; better toes; and the clearer anvil line.
Anyway, the bottom line: They were asking $3,000 for the coin! I took all the other coins they had at their asking price but passed on the 03-S. They asked me why and I said I thought $3,000 was simply too much for an AU58.
Well, how much did I think it was worth? I quoted them some price experience of my own, and said I thought the coin was worth $800 to $1,000, but because the coin was so beautiful I could stretch to $1,200. They thought it over and passed, commenting that they were sure they could get more by hanging on to it.
So clearly, the value I had quoted for you is light. That coin is really a jackpot coin. Congratulations again.
Best wishes,
Just Having Fun

Mr Fun, it was great seeing you again. I'll share with ecos, 1jester, shiro & the rest the beauty of a 13-S dime you were kind enough to part with. Til next time! Take care

This sweet little 10 c. you've obtained deserves it's own thread.

Wow Filam, that is a REALLY nice coin. The was awfully sweet of Justhavingfun to let go of such a gem.
Congratulations!
It was graded 64 by ANACS and it looks much better in hand.
The 03-s is a killer

Good to hear from you again, 1 Jester. And maybe our paths will cross. I'll let you know when I'm returning to the states.
Hi Mac Crimmon: I agree: Giving that coin its own thread would be nice. It's interesting to me that the beauty of the coins is creating its own enthusiasts. That's how I got sucked in. I saw these coins in a coin shop in the Megamall (Manila), bought a few and fell in love with 'em. Seven years later, I still do love 'em.
Dear Matt/ Ecos. I was blessed, because when I stumbled upon this series, nobody was collecting them. And when I say "nobody," I mean NOBODY. Not even the Philippine collectors were very ardent. They were more interested in the predecessor Spanish-Philippine coins, the guerilla notes from World War II, and stamps.
But I was wildly enthusiastic and had -- for the first time in my life -- lots of cash in my pocket. So I scarfed up hundreds, even thousands of these beautiful coins. Now, it's payback time and I am really happy to be able to help other ardent collectors.
I'm approaching my 500th post. I think for my 500th post, I'll take one of my pretty little US Philippine coins and post it as a free give away.
Warm regards from Manila where I'm scoring lots of interesting variety and error coins and a few really, really scarce dates. A dealer is coming over tomorrow morning. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
Just Having Fun!
For those who were following this thread, just got back the 1905-S 50 Centavo from across the street:
1905 S 50C MS62 #2750594-002
YAHOO!!
I sure didn't see that one coming. Congrats!

Congratulations! In an NGC MS 62 holder, that's a $4,000 coin and getting it at auction raw in the Philippines, where they like shiny not original toning, I'd bet that you didn't pay a tenth of that for the coin.
The coins are so attractive and challenging, they're great to collect in and of themselves. But surely, the opportunity to pick up some great coins for chump change is one of the sweet added benefits of this series.
Congratulations again and best wishes...
