New SCD today

Thanks to Stone, I've been receiving the SCD weekly now for the last 3 weeks. My question is, does Dominique Wilkins need money or something? Did anyone else get their copy in the mail yet? It seems as if he's selling all of his personal items from his entire NBA career...

That is exactly what I was thinking. First I also want to thank Stone for my weekly delivery of SCD. The ad for the Wilkins items did not indicate the origin but given the sure volume of items it has to be from Dominque.

  • I was thinking the same thing. He can't need money could he? He was a superstar and had to make a ton of cash.

I can't understand why any player would sell off important items- I've seen Mike Cuellar's Cy Youngs, Lamarr Hoyts, Tony Gwynn silver sluggers, gold gloves from more than a few players. It would seem they could make the same amount doing autographs at a few shows. Maybe they just aren't as sentimental as we are about such things, but it seems a shame to sell them.

  • This is the first one I have received free and I thought the same thing. I even had a few discussions via AIM about it. It is truly sad if he needs the money.

<< <i>He is the modern-day Dominique Wilkins, the nine-time All-Star whose generosity to his immediate and extended family was legendary.

“Nique’s biggest crime was he was too nice,” Barkley said. “He was going broke while everyone in his family was driving around in Mercedeses.”

Wilkins’s brother Gerald played for 13 seasons and made half the money his brother did, but is in much better shape today because he was able to draw the line.

“Gerald knew how to say no,” said Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a teammate of the Wilkins brothers in Atlanta. “I’ll never forget one Christmas when we were playing the Knicks. Gerald was telling his mother, Geraldine, ‘I’m going to give you all gifts — that’s it. You’re not taking all my money like you did to Nique.’

“Dominique was the nicest human being in the world. He just didn’t know how to say no.” >>

Link doesn't work unless you sign up and create an id, but it's a common story, unfortunately.

  • I was really suprised to see Nique's items up for auction. You think maybe it could happen to an old time player when financial planning wasn't thought about. But a respected Hall of Famer of the past decade? Do you think the NBA has a financial planning responsibility for it's players? Seems like a shame.

It'd be so easy to set up a secure retirement fund. Deduct a certain amount out of each paycheck, invest it conservatively in bonds or index funds..and you could set yourself up forever. Sad.

  • Here's the auction, pages 10-16.

I'd also like to thank Stone for the free SCD hook up. I just received my first ones, and have enjoyed them so far. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more articles in between the gazillions of ads though.

I was wondering what was up with that. Wilkins did make a fair amount of money, it would be hard to believe that he also attended the Mike Tyson school of finance.
