New buyer w/ no feedback -what to do?

I recently sold a card for a little over $100.00. The buyer just joined eBay a week ago and has no feedback. He paid for the item via PayPal but the address is UNCONFIRMED. I know PayPal won't cover me as a seller since the address is unconfirmed, even if I send with Delivery Confirmation. Any suggestions on how I can protect myself as a seller? First thought is simply asking him if he can get his address confirmed on PayPal. I could a week for him to work it out. Any other suggestions?

  • I just posted something on this line a couple days ago. Could be an honest new guy. Could be someone who just got NARU'ed and is opening up a new account. Without a way of keeping people off of Ebay once they get suspended 1, 2, 3, or 20 times it starts taking the fun out of it. Another thing is to put in your listing "will only ship to a confirmed Paypal address" which is what a lot of sellers who accept paypal have been doing...

kind of sucks for you. i had a similar situation with a guy with a 14 rating. he bought a $200 cardand was paying everyone else. he was also selling rare gold coins at $700 a piece so i knew he had the money. every time i sent him a reminder he told me to stop harassing him and he was adding a two day penalty on my time for getting the money. he of course said that he would be giving me a negative rating.

    some people are just jerks.
  • If you have to ship to an unconfirmed address, I suggest you use "signature confirmation" instead of just regular delivery confirmation. At least it will show who signed for it when you look it up. It could be a brand spanking new member to the ebay world, and only used 1 of the 2 methods of application.....his checking acct; or credit card....but not both....that's why he's unconfirmed. In the long run, I say just don't accept any unconfirmed addresses from the U.S. I get a lot of Canadian bidders who are unconfirmed, but that's a whole different story.

You beat me to it. I've never had a problem with a Canadian unconfirmed address, but that's a different situation than a non confirmed US address.
  • As a newbie who has yet to buy anything on eBay and thus has no feedback -- still waiting for a mint 1952 Mantle for less than $100 image -- how do you go about confirming your address?
  • how do you go about confirming your address?

You have to give Paypal 2 out of 3 methods that they propose.
    1) Bank Acct - checking acct or saving's acct #
    2) Submit a Credit Card #
    3) Provide your Social Security # (which no one does )

I think the majority goes with the first 2 options.
  • I just had a buyer buy a $100+ item on ebay and pay with paypal. They are unconfirmed and from Canada. Does that make a difference?

I've never had this problem before either and it just happened to me last night.

Sold a card for $350.00+ and the buyer pays immediately by Paypal with no confirmed address.

Address is his office and not a home address and he sent me a friendly email indicating such.

Buyer has a feedback rating of over 1000+ and 0 negatives.

Now what exactly is it I should do and what should I be concerned about. What type of protection is paypal covering me from if I send the item with delivery confirmation?

    Thanks for any help.

    Shawn.

Holy cow, it's like applying for a mortgage. I guess whatever it takes to keep down the number of scams. Though I don't see what the problem is for the seller if the buyer has paid in full. After payment, isn't the buyer the one who has to worry about what happens next?

For me as a seller it's real simple. I eliminate the potential problem ahead of time. All winning bidders who look as though they "could" be a problem...I e-mail them immediately after the auction ends and tell them I ship only to PayPal confirmed addresses or I accept check or money order. Customers with say over 100 feedback and no negs, if they are unconfirmed and look "okay"...I still ship - never had a problem.

Shawn - I think you have to trust his feedback. At least he emailed you and told you why his address was unconfirmed. I have been in similar situations before, and have never had an issue. I don't want to tell you "go ahead" here - but why not send it to his office and spend the extra $1.50 or so for signature confirmation? That way, at least you have recourse with PayPal if need be.

Okay guys, thanks for the advice.

1000+ positives and 0 negatives is a pretty strong indicator to me that he is on the up and up.

I guess I just didn't know exactly what I as a seller should be fearing. I've been paid, I'll mail insured (and with signature confirmation this time), but didn't know what issue might/could arise.

    Thanks again for the help.

  • I usually don't mind shipping to an unconfirmed address as long as the feedback is good.

The buyer that I am concerned about has:
    0 Feedback
    Joined eBay last week
Has bought or has high bids of over $2,400 (including being the current high bidder of $1,000 on a card) in cards since joining eBay last week.

I have emailed the buyer asking if he/she could get their addresses confirmed. I am willing to hold the card until so. I will see how the communication goes and might contact some of the other sellers to see how their transactions went.

  • I just shipped to an unconfirmed address recently. The buyer had 94 positives with 0 negs.
His email address was @sympatico.ca which is a canadian ISP. However, the unconfirmed address
was in Michigan and I sent it with "Signature Confirmation". My thought was he probably works over
the border or whatever.....anyways, it was signed for and he left me positive feedback yesterday.

Most Canadian paypal users have unconfirmed address......something about Paypal's policy regarding
international & Canada getting them confirmed is harder. It is getting better by 50% as Canadians are getting confirmed. Although, it will say that they are Verified even if unconfirmed. I normally state in my auctions that all Int'l or Canadian users that want to pay with PP, must pay for registered mail. At least I can track it and they have to sign for it. If they feel the registered shipping is too high (exact rate by the way), then they must pay with a Money Order for regular airmail. I have never had any problems with this. So far it's worked out fine.

The downfall with unconfirmed address in the U.S. is, even if you ship it with delivery confirmation, they can still say they never received it because the address is unconfirmed....Paypal will give them back their money. It's a total scam.....a major loophole. I had a friend who shipped some luggage by UPS to an unconfirmed address in the east coast. Buyer claims she never received it even though the UPS tracking showed that it was delivered and with a signature. There was a hold on my friend's account until it was cleared up.....the Paypal rep even told my friend that she can file fraud against this person, but they had to go by their Paypal policy. Eventually, my friend threatened that she would sue this person and the claim was dropped. Again, it's all BS.
