Cooperstown??

I'll be leaving on vacation out east this weekend (from Wisconsin). As I was laying out the routes I noticed that I'll be driving pretty close to Cooperstown. Has anyone been to the BB HOF? Would you recommend stopping?

Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Was there two summers ago. It's a must see!

Avoid the nearby baseball card shops though. I was in every one of them on the main street - they were ALL ripoffs - no graded cards and loaded with phony autographs - tourist traps for sure. For example...a card shop there was asking $1,500 for a Mickey Mantle & Roger Maris signed poster in which the signatures absolutely looked fake.

  • Well, I guess there's no question about it! So I think I'll be stopping there. Now, how do I deal with the wifey on this? Hmmmm...

Thanks for the tip about the card shops too. I would've probably visited a couple.

  • Must See.

I agree regarding rip-off card shops, however, there were a few dealers set up in the building across the street (Elks Lodge?), and I found them to be very reasonable and great guys in which to simply visit.

Had some graded, but a load of raw cigarette cards, and nice selection of vintage.

    Again, very reasonable.

    HAVE FUN!

Mucky- I was there on Saturday, What a geat day!!! I try to go every few years or so since I only live about 2 1/2 hours away from there. The card collection there is pretty amazing too. Between the Hall and the shops on Main St., you will need the whole day there. But Steve is right, not the place to buy cards.

Can you really spend up to the whole day at the hall itself? I've never been and was thinking about making the pilgrimage to the hallowed hall myself, perhaps during the next long weekend. I'm about 4 hours away from where I live.

I dont know about the whole day at the hall, I think that you could get a thorough look at everything in about 4 hours. Thats if you read the plaques and the displays. I killed about 2 hours in the Double Day Cafe enjoying some beers and lunch watching the Red Sox vs Yankees. The rest of the time in the shops with my wife.

Hey Mucky, if you do go, Check out the display of World series rings, Wait until you see the Marlins ring!!! You cant miss that one...

Plus, just riding around Upstate New York's countryside is just so beautiful, the Hall is a bonus!

  • I was able to make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown about 14 years ago -- on the company's dollar. I was installing some software in a plant in Oneonta, NY, and made the drive up there. I went with a co-worker who wanted to go spelunking instead of going to the Hallowed Halls of Cooperstown!! We both enjoyed ourselves thoroughly -- me the most, I'm sure!

Go and let us know what you think. The displays change, so I'd be curious what can be viewed now...

    Enjoy!

  • Plan a return trip if you can't stay for 2 days. It will take that long just to walk around yet stop and see everything.
