SGC 1914 Cracker Jack Set at the National

Hi Guys...this is my first post on this board, but I have been reading this board for the last few years.....I have collected cards for nearly three decades and am in the process of grading my collection. With that said, I have taken my time and done a ton of research over the last 2-3 years as to which grading service I want to grade my collection. Needless to say I sway at times, but I always seem to find myself coming back to Psa.

With that said, I was at the National in Chicago and happened upon the SGC booth.....I was blown away by the 1914 Cracker Jack set on display....What may surprise you is I was appalled at the way the cards were "resting" in the SGC holders.....I counted no less than four cards, including the Cobb, that were horribly pintched underneath the Black insert.......I mentioned this to one of the employees at SGC and he just gave me a blank look and said, "I will let them know".......

This is arguably the finest prewar set in existance and it is being damaged by the holder it is in????? Are you kidding me!!??? Just curious if anyone else noticed this??? I went to the SGC website and clicked on the cracker jack set link on the bottom and low and behold the scans of the cards show very clearly that the cards are being "pinched". Look at the scan of the Ty Cobb and then look at the back scan of the Joe Jackson.......is it me???? Just curious for some fresh opinions.

  • This is nothing new I have a few SGC cards that if cracked and reholdered would be a grade or 2 lower because of this. Their holders suck!

How nice, a GEM Mint 10 Jackson pinched underneath the black insert. That does not bode very well for their holder.

    First, welcome!

On the holders - there's always going to be good and bad with everything - the black "gasket" is favored esthetically by many. I agree, cards can get stuck under the gasket. Whether they are damaged? No experience.

They're a great company IMO. I just prefer PSA.

Now I was thinking of getting this card graded by PSA but the white looks better with the black gasket.

    What do you think? Davilillo?

Any time you have an extra piece of plastic, it cannot be good for a card. I have owned several cards in SGC holders that get caught between the gasket and the outer shell. That is one of the reasons why I no longer use SGC.

Hopefully the Joe Jackson card is not damaged by the SGC holder.

Just spoke to someone who knows the deal - he says the card is OK. SGC position: if the card slips under the gasket, it will not get damaged. I have no knowledge myself.

I've had lots of cards slip under the gasket, including Cracker Jacks, that are on thinner stock. Never a problem.
also had lots of floating psa cards in holders that didn't fit them, also never a problem.

Remember the test that Bruce Moreland did, taking the floating card in the PSA holder to Home Depot and attaching it to the paint shaker? Not a problem.

The only problems I've ever heard of with cards in holders were '68 3d's cracking. That can get expensive.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • But they sure look nice with the black frame..

When expensive cards get wedged in between the gasket and the outer plastic, is there a good solution to get the card out without damaging it?

I have tried to hit the holder to shake the card loose but I fear this might only cause more damage to the card.

Best way is to call SGC and send to them for a reholder. I bet they would probably do it for free, for gasket/insert related issues.

    Hi Jim
We haven't heard from you since your original post.

I was wondering if you contacted SGC?

I spoke with a friend who is close to their operation and he says that they are aware of this and it doesn't cause any damage.

So, I'm thinking of sending this card to them as a test.

What do you think of this....Davilillo?

    Good for you.

  • I was just curious for opinions and was wondering if I was the only one who questioned their holder for cracker jacks......I know that 1914 cracker jack cards are quite thin, so much so that they are only a few ply thicker than a kleenex! I have a lot of respect for SGC as a grading company and I have submited about 100 cards. More than anything I was wondering what the guy thinks who paid 800K for a phenomenal set that appears to be a bit unsafe, or at the very least very unstable. thanks for the opinions!
