2005 Nat'l Topps 1955 four "missing" cards

I don't know if this topic has already come up, but was just wondering what others thought of this "set" that was issued ONLY at the recent National show in Chicago. They were "given" out as part of a VIP package which costs $99., and now these cards are finding their way to eBay. From what i've seen, the cards look fantastic, but i have to wonder if they'll ever have any real value. I have to question the PHOTOS that were selected for these issues, as they don't appear to be pictures of the players AS THEY WERE in 1955. For example, the picture used for Herb Score was the SAME picture used on his 1958 All-Star card! I can't verify the others, but i wouldn't be surprised if these were likewise photos of these players taken LATER.

Would be interested in others comments on these 4 cards.

Comments from "priceless, to they are crap" have been mentioned here. As an owner of a 55 topps set i have no desire for them. With that said many folks like them and that is all that matters.

    Good for you.
  • Like them or hate them, I have made money on them and they are very limited.

  • I think YOU have an INTERESTING way of capitalizing certain WORDS to illustrate your POINT.... Just kidding. I think it's a cool looking set, and not much of a risk at about $9 per card. Not much long run potential though. How many promo cards are worth more now than when they were released and got their initial push? I would imagine that the player collectors will get theirs right out of the gate, leaving not much demand for them in the future.

  • Well they have been out for quite awhile now. And when has a promo card has such a good theme as these do? Come on 4 missing cards from one of the most popular post war sets! Add to that the popularity of Topps Heritage and you have a winner.

  • I agree that now the set is very cool. However, when Topps inevitably floods the market with Heritage crap thereby ruining the concept and desirability, this set will go the way of 91 Leaf, 90 Wild Card, and just about every other promo set that garnered interest upon release. Even the 93 Finest promos which are very rare really don't bring much except for the Nolan Ryan refractor, which is inflated because there are fewer cards than there are Ryan Master collectors. I'm not saying the concept for the set isn't cool or that they aren't worth buying, just that it's probably not the best way to go in terms of long term investment, as history has showed. I think that's what Steve's question was.

Don't ever forget that card companies will run any decent concept into the ground. Due to this promo set's popularity, I would give even money that says a set of "missing" cards through the years will be in production soon. Kind of funny when you think about- Topps saying "Look how we screwed up in the past!" and actually making money off their notable exclusions.

  • Just wait until PSA adds them to the 1955 Topps Master Set in the registry, knocking all the 100% complete guys back down to 99.9%!
