    Jesus Kobe,
Cool Papa had to have been 90 and close to passing when he signed that if it was during/after '89. Give the guy a break. One of the best negro league fables was about him: He was so fast he would flick the light switch and be in bed and under the covers before the lights went out. God, how the history of baseball would have been a whole lot richer if America wasn't so racist back then. The major leagues with Bell, Josh Gibson, Satchell Paige (under 45), and many others would have been unbelievable.

His wife must have loved that one!
  • I've just started bidding on some of the Perez-Steele cards. Great way to get some authentic HOF auto's for a good price.

Last week a set of 49 including all the biggies - PSA/DNA but not holdered - sold for around 2500$ - was a good price IMO - if I had the money I would have bid myself!

Cool Papa Bell was quite ill late in life. I believe he had a stroke (not 100% sure) and all his Perez Steele auto's are post stroke.

His pre-stroke auto's are beautiful. Here's the one from my collection:

Another great story about Cool Papa was told by Satchel Paige (I don't have the exact quote, so I'm paraphrasing)

"Cool Papa Bell once hit a line drive past my ear. I turned just in time to see the ball hit him in the ass as he was sliding into second base..."

And, Josh Gibson would be the single season and all time home run king.
