Hurricane Katrina Relief

As anyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the past week knows, the Gulf Coast, particularly the area from New Orleans to Biloxi, was utterly destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The people who have fled this storm have stopped in many places along the way. There are an estimated 300-400 in the small town I live in. Most of these folks have nothing but the clothes on their backs and nothing to go home to. This week I am selling a few cards on ebay (user ID jason045) with all the profits going to the local churches, shelters, and community centers that are helping these people. If you would like to donate some cards to sell or cash to help these folks just let me know. Many thanks to Jim Vitale (highend) who has pledged to send some cards to help benefit the victims. Thanks to all who help, and God bless.

I tried running auction over on the beckett boards but it went on deaf ears. LMK what you can get the most of in your
area if that is how you are selling. You can count me in!

  • What organization will receive the proceeds?

I have been in the disaster relief/recovery business for 8 years. Presently my duty station is Pensacola, FL on a 3 year long term recovery project after Hurricane Ivan.

This now is up in the air since the aftermath of Katrina has begun to impact this area. We will see people relocating here and the whole picture will change. My projects, like building permanent housing, revitalization of business, public works restoration, etc. will change dramatically.

If you need any advice, maybe some facts to add to your auctions I am glad to help.

You probably know that donations should go to a well established organization. I recommend the Red Cross. Used to work for them and know how their system works.

Now I work for the feds.

I can tell you that recovery from this event will last for many years. Measurable changes will come slowly. Neighborhoods will be bulldozed and the land scraped to eliminate toxic hazards. Thousands will never return. Hundreds of thousands will not have a first hand look at their homes for a year or more.

If I can help PM me or e-mail SoFLPhillyFan email

After working more than 50 disaster operations this one is beyond comprehension. It will require new and innovative thinking to bring New Orleans and the Gulf Coast back.

The scary part is that we are in a 20-30 year cycle of increased hurricane activity. It began in 1995. We have 10-20 years left. Other major urban centers could see the same thing happen.

  • Philly fan, the Red Cross has yet to step in and help in my area here. All the support is coming from churches and individuals coming out of their own pockets. I don't have a lot of money to give, but I figured I could sell a few of my cards and help a little. Really what I had in mind is giving the money to the churches or maybe taking a couple of the families to Wal-Mart to buy them the essentials. We have a state park a few miles out of town. I went out there Friday and it is completely packed. There are families out there with babies who can't afford to buy them diapers and formula. These are the kind of people I want to help. See, I've always been one the sit on my hands in a situation like this. I'd always say "Well someone else will help them". I just feel like I need to do something for these folks. If you guys don't feel comfortable with trusting me to sell your cards and help these people, please do it yourself and donate to the relief effort. I'm sure there are places to give in your area. I just want to do my part in making a difference even if its only in a few poeples lives. Any other advice you could give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks--Jason

  • Love the effort Jason I'll throw some bids your way.

And for gods sake get some better pics or scans for your future auctions I would NEVER bid on an auction like that if it weren't for a good cause. Turn the cards right side up and get a closer pic and I and many others prefer not to have multiple cards in the pic. Sorry you hit all my pet peeves in one auction.

But all that said I am glad you have decided to help these people, I wish there were more people like you in the world.

<< <i>Philly fan, the Red Cross has yet to step in and help in my area here. >>

FEMA is keeping the red cross out...this has been reported and substantiated by many on the ground and at red cross.

FEMA kept out boaters, numbering over 500, who wanted to go in to deliver supplies or to ferry people out.

FEMA is the biggest contributor to this whole mess...followed up closely by the decision to fold preparing the gulf states for hurricane preparedness into homeland security, then giving then a tiny fraction of the money they needed to keep the levee system secure.

Sorry Ax, I have to take exception to your opinion this time - with due respect.

Unless you are in the business, as I have been for 10 years.

The responsibilty for disaster planning lies with the local emergecy management agency. Hazards are assessed and resources are gathered to deal with those hazards. If your levees are not strong enough then compensate and create the appropriate plan. As an event unfolds the agencies who lend support to the locals follow the plans that have been established at the local level. This is the foundation of the response.

Neither FEMA or Homeland Security is responsible for appropriating the funds to expand the levees. The Army Corps of Engineers is not under DHS/FEMA authority. With that said I am disheartend by the lack of Federal support for the project. Disaster mitigation should come first in the process and saves lives and property.

There is a debate going on about funding for terrorism hampering disaster preparedness efforts. This is true. But, much of the funding that local governments have received was for equipment that can be used in any type of disaster. We are talking about billions of dollars in the last few years.

As for FEMA keeping the Red Cross out? 3-5 days after the end of the disaster is the standard for getting help to the people. The hurricane ended on Monday. The flooding in New Orleans didn't stabilize until Friday. Hurricanes and floods are different events with different response characteristics. In the 3-5 day period life safety is the issue and areas are often not safe enough to enter. The Red Cross is very aware of this.

Have mistakes been made? Certainly and all levels of government are to blame from local to federal. We have experienced three "super disasters" over the last four years. A new response strategy has to be implemented. Changes were made as the Sept. 11 response was carried out, but this is a different animal with different needs. It's not just as simple as saying "send in the boats and get those people."

Oh, I mentioned earlier that I work for the Feds? Yes....I work for FEMA.

  • Sorry for the scans, Jeff. Normally I scan one card at a time with supersize. I was in a hurry to get these up and my slow dial up connection takes about 10 min to load 1 photo so thats why I put 4 on each. Tanks for the bids anyway.

I've been waiting to receive some items, that I "instant paid" via Paypal $55 (pre-Katrina). I received an ebay message from Michael (i.e., the seller) apologizing to me that in the wake of katrina, he has been out looking for his missing family members, and if it would be ok, he would get the items out to me when he could?

I told Michael he must immediately stop looking for his missing wife, children and mother and honor his "binding ebay contract" with me, and get his behind in a flat bottom boat and float over to the next available post office and mail me my items right away!

    Just kidding!

Michael (from: Louisiana), you can take all the time you need!

Who knows? His next email message to me might be addressed from the Houston Astrodome, Utah or Minnesota? I can live without my $55 worth of OPCs, while this man is out looking for lost loved ones. Pretty sad story!

God's Speed Michael in locating your loved ones!

P.S. Jason, I'm going to add something extra to my Red Cross contribution, in your name. You are doing a nice thing!

Good idea for the auctions but maybe you should put something about Katrina Relieft in the auction title? Mention proceeds to charity? You might get more bids!? Good luck on your auctions and good luck to all our friends down south recovering from this disaster.
