Need help with grade, please

collecting my birthyear coins. I'm also a german citizen, came to the states in 61 and don't know the the first thing about german coins..image

I'm calling it an AU 58, but then I kinda sorta grade conservatively.

Also the eagle is the obv., correct ??..image

Any idea as to value ??

  • I love those big 5 Mark coins. I'd have to say XF45.

  • I'd agree with AU at best. These tend to be very baggy looking.

I don't think your AU58 assessment is outta line. Looks to me like it could be a 58, or even a low-end UNC, like MS61, depending on how much of that is friction versus bagmarks.

As to which side is the obverse, I personally would choose the eagle, but Krause has the other side as obverse and the eagle as reverse.

That is an interesting background you used for the pictures. What was it?

It is an AU coin... mostlikely dipped at some point. The Lustre is very good much better than ef. MS is possible if those are just bag marks but bag marks combined with hairlines will not help this coin into an MS60 grade

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

The coin has tons of luster, and the rims are fairly sharp. Also, I don't really see any wear on the coin. If there are no hairlines, I'd guess the coin garners an MS61-62 at a reputable TPGS. On the other hand, if those are hairlines in the reverse field, and not simply bagmarks, I'd say the coin will only grade AU50. I believe the coin has a legitimate chance of low-grade uncirculated.
