GOETZ: K-404 Richard Wagner - Franz Liszt

K-404 RICHARD WAGNER – FRANZ LISZT, 1928, Struck AE, 65mm, wt. 93.7g, edge-stamped Bayer. Hauptmunzamt, AU.

Commemorating the occasion of the 6. Wartburg May festival in 1928.

Obverse: Richard Wagner, bust left with birth/death dates in legend above (1813-1883) and Franz Liszt, bust right, with birth/death date in legend above (1811-1886). Names of both in exergue.

Reverse: Ludwig, Landgrave (Count) of Thuringia and Saint Elisabeth standing below Wartburg castle with ‘Wartburg Maientage’ in legend. The year 1928 to left of Ludwig with K.G. in exergue.

The obverse is a rather uninspired sculptural execution of the two composers and, in all likelihood, they were muled from earlier pieces made of both. This certainly isn’t the first time Goetz quickly added a ‘wooden Indian’ bust in order to complete a piece but this obverse may well be one of his weakest. Nonetheless, the intended link by Goetz of the composers works associated with the Wartburg music festival is evident. Wagner composed Tannhäuser and Liszt the Legend of the Holy Elizabeth both of which are connected to the reverse subject matter.

Goetz redeems himself with a well-executed reverse visually lining out The Legend of Elisabeth.

This example is a very softly struck piece and, for the time being, will fill the hole. I will, however, continue looking for the Cast 130mm piece that has so far eluded me.
