Peace Dollar regrades---went 5/8

GRANDAMGRANDAM Posts: 8,546 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi guys,

I put together a Peace Dollar Set about 15 years ago in PCGS MS63,,,except for the 1934-S,,,, it was PCGS MS64. I recently started upgrading it. All the common dates in MS65 and I am trying to get the rest in MS64. When I went to the bank and started looking at some of the coins I was replacing I thought,,,,,,,HUM,,,,,,, some of these are pretty nice for MS63's,,,,,,,,, so I pulled out 8 coins I thought had a shot at upgrading. Of 8 coins sent in,,,,,all were PCGS MS63's,,,, I went 5 for 8 upgrading to MS64. Now, I wish I would have sent the 1934-S as it is a really nice coin,,,, maybe I can upgrade it to MS65. Here are my grading results. Remember all were PCGS MS63's,,,,all were in old green label holders.

LINE # CERT # COIN DATE DENOMINATION VARIETY COUNTRY GRADE
1 2202XXXX 1921 S$1 Peace, High Relief USA MS64
2 2202XXXX 1926-D S$1 USA MS64
3 2202XXXX 1927-D S$1 USA MS63
4 2202XXXX 1927-S S$1 USA MS63
5 2202XXXX 1928 S$1 USA MS64
6 2202XXXX 1934 S$1 USA MS63
7 2202XXXX 1935 S$1 USA MS64
8 2202XXXX 1935-S S$1 USA MS64

Date Received: 07/19/2005
Date Shipped: No Date Specified

Here is a link to my newly improved set.

GDH Peace Dollars

I only moved up (1) place,,,,from #33 to #32 but I calculate the value of the (5) upgrades went from a Grey Sheet ASK Value of $1490 to $2580 for the (5) coins that upgraded. Not bad for $144 in grading fees.

Good job. How is the strike on the 21?

    Mark,

The 1921 has a decent strike. There is some flatness in the hair detail but overall a nice coin.

Great results! I believe Peace dollars are an under-appreciated series with a lot of potential.

You've inspired me to look at my inventory list. I started buying PCGS coins in 1987, and if my recordkeeping is accurate, I've got 38 first generation "rattler" holders, and 160 with a green label. In a way, it would be a shame to remove some of the coins from their current holders, but the possibility of upgrading makes it tempting. During its first 10 years of existence, PCGS was very stingy about giving grades above 65. I'll have to take a close look at those old slabs next time I get to the bank.

    Thanks Guys!!!!!

To clarify,,,,,a PM I received,,,, these were hand-picked coins my me when I bought them. Out of 24 coins in the Peace Dollar set I only found (8) that had a shot at upgrades. (5) upgraded. So I don't mean to imply that any coin in a old green label holder will upgrade. But,,,, they are worth looking at when ever you come across them so check them out!!!! You might find a possible upgrade.

    First of, great job!

    4 2202XXXX 1927-S S$1 USA MS63

I've tried to make one 64 for my set, having 2 very nice for the grade 63's and didn't make one. One of the 63's used to be an old Anacs (the photo old anacs) MS65/65.

This date seems to be elusive/tough in grades higher than MS63 image

You did great! If you were a professional baseball player, you would be making millions!!!

By the way, did you crack them out and send them back in raw or did you resubmit them in the holder?

Remember all were PCGS MS63's,,,,all were in old green label holders.

Can I presume these were they left in the holders & not cracked out?

I have a pretty nice Peace Dollar set - have a few upgrades I'd like to make, mainly my 34-S which is the only AU. I would love to have a MS.

You can see my set in my sig line link.
