Another new board member

Hey all,

I am new to the boards and hail from Boynton FL. I normally collect autographs but have been reading the boards lately and I am tempted to start collecting some unopened wax boxes or packs ( any ideas on good years to store?) Also I may start putting together a PSA graded set. I was thinking either 1985 topps or 1983 Topps? Any input on those two sets would be greatly appreciated or inputs on another year. Here are a couple baseballs I submitted. I am dissapointed in the Williams Ball but not suprised by the Mantle, at least they are authentic. I usually collect 500 HR items. I have a nice 500 HR jersey, 500 HR bat and several 500 HR balls. All have either Sosa, Bonds or McGwire on them. Looking to get into something new though. This board is awesome! I love watching the wax box breaks and hope to do my own sometime.

welcome seabass! My advise to you is to MAKE SURE you really like the issue before you attempt a graded set. Especially the MONSTER Topps sets. They are a LONG HARD road. With that said, collect away!!!!!!!!

I'm confused. When did PSA start doing half grades? I checked the cert# and it checks out.

Can someone shed some light on this...

    Hey, SeaBass,

Welcome! This isn't probably something you'd want to collect, BUT, just in case it's something you'd be interested in, check out this Coors Bottle commemorating Ernie Banks' 500 home runs. I found this item while researching some estate items I picked up while on vacation last month...

Best of luck on your collecting passions!

  • Thanks for the ideas and greetings. Has anyone ever worked on a 1983 or 1985 topps graded set? I have contemplated 1978 (like many of the board members) or 1980 but lean more towards 83 or 85 topps because the wax is much cheaper then those years yet still has some great rookie years and HOF players. Also besides BBCkid and BBCEXCHANGE. Is there anyone else on ebay etc. that anyone buys unopened 80's wax boxes from with good results?

Sea Bass, I don't buy unopened from ANYBODY but the Baseball Card Exchange or the BBC kid. IMO they are the most reptuable out there as far as unopened material goes. I am open for suggestions though! Is there someone else as trustworthy as these two?

  • How about Krukcards? They list 1985 Topps wax boxes quite frequently d seem to carry alot of unopened product?

I will more then likely go with BBCexchange. The only product they dont have from 1977 topps on up (at least baseball wise) is 1984 Donruss. There must not be too much of it out there anymore?

  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
There is plenty of unopened 84 Donruss I believe, and BBC Exchange usually has wax boxes. Keep checking in with them. I have bought from Kruk cards before. I have had no problems with them. I buy late 70's unopened and for the money I trust only the Baseball Card Exchange and the BBC Kid. As you move into the 80's the product just explodes in availabilty and prices are much cheaper. If I was buying mid 80's material I guess I would shop around the price more than the stuff that I buy now. I am willing to pay the higher prices for 70's stuff form the big two. With it comes peace of mind that you are buying quality material.

    Hi SeasBass
Welcome! I'm a little late to the party!

First, I think that the 83 and 85T sets would be fun to do raw but kind of expensive graded for my budget.

If you are at all attracted to new releases, I like the Topps Heritage, and Bowman, Bowman Chrome to name a few.

Last, I would recommend, for diversity of enjoyment, considering a vintage set of some kind - even in midgrades. Something from the pre-WWII era and/or something from the golden age of the 50s. The 55T is very popular due to the availability and if graded, a relatively small set.

From the 60s, I like the 65 and 67T sets and the 63F BB sets.

Good luck and don't be a stranger!

  • That is an excellent idea. I may try and do a vintage set first. I was wondering in my mind already if I want to grade 792 cards. In time just the grading fees would be sky high.
