Conder Grading help

I bought the below Conder a little while ago and I am not sure how to grade it and if I am really happy with it. I am thinking of sending it back but I need a few questions answered first.

What do you think it grades?
What do you think of the marks?
When were the marks made?

What do you think it grades?

It could be AU, but I would say MS60 (due to the deep marks on the nose, cheek, jaw, and brow).

What do you think of the marks?

    They are very distracting.

    When were the marks made?

They appear to be original to the minting of the coin (due to placement and the lack of rim dings).

These are tough questions, and I can understand your problem. Overall it's a nice token, the fields are clean, the reverse is real nice, but those hits to the face take away a lot of the appeal.

Grade? I personally would say AU50, American.

The marks? Not too distracting, though I think his nose must hurt like hell.

    Good question.

The weakness on the reverse is probably due to the metal needing to fill the head on the obverse. The marks to the face are unfortunate but the coin is only half-penny sized so they are not overly large. The strike is ever so slightly off center. I would guess that the flatness in the obverse is mostly due to not enough metal to fully fill the design and not wear. Without having it in hand I would grade it a 62.

Your picture name indicates that this is the common variety of the token.

Thanks guys, yes the marks on the nose bother me the most. It is the more common variety.

  • Geez, I would have given the reverse MS60, but I don't know what to say about the obverse, as in the face image. I guess AU55 would be fair to say about it... that honestly does hurt. My guess is that someone had too much time on their hand and decided to ruin it... :/

I agree with your decision to send the coin back. I sent back the coin in this thread for the very same reason. Nose damage. As someone else mentioned, if it bothers you now, it will always bother you...

What do you think it grades? AU ish I see slight wear on the high points

What do you think of the marks? The marks stand out, but they look to almost be a die flaw, particularly the nose?

When were the marks made? A long time ago.
I don't like it to well either....
