Seated Dollar Set pretty much completed

Barring a miracle of near biblical proportions [ image ] that jars loose a tightly held pop 1/0 from someone, my Seated Dollar Set is now pretty much complete. At the Sweet Collection sale a week ago Sunday [B&M] I acquired the last three available pieces:

I'm also pleased to have acquired a couple of proofs for my "Provenance Set" of early proofs: Pittman and Norweb. Later at the Heritage sale I acquired Amon Carter as well. Still looking for Garrett and others....

  • Congradulations--BTW I'll tell Amon's wife you have him, and Garrett you're looking for him..image

Wonderful accomplishment. Aside from the date, they all kinda look the same. Ever thought of becoming a type collector??image

The 71 is really a screamer. Nice catch. What's next? Any shot at the gem 59-S?

I thought the two Carter Proofs were very cool, keep'em together!

That set is a mindblower. First of all, I can hardly believe anyone would even attempt that set in MS! But to see it complete...wow. I don't think that set of Seated dollars will ever be equaled.

Which is your favorite, TDN? The 1866? It's real pretty. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I insist on having two favorites - a no motto and a motto. That way I don't have such a tough decision! image

My no motto favorite is the Garrett 1848 in MS66. It's the finest by 3 grades and a miracle of preservation. My motto favorite is the James A Stack 1871-CC in MS64. Stunning periphrial toning and prooflike surfaces. Compared to most other 71-CC's, it's another miracle! image

    What grade is that 1871?

TDN: More good stuff. You will indeed encounter more miracles of biblical proportions!

  • Beautiful set TDN!!! Are you going to try and get the new ones entombed in PCGS plastic?

    The 1871 is PCGS MS66.

Yes, I much prefer the PCGS holder - the plastic is thinner and clearer. Coins simply look better in it.

This is probably the first thread that has really left me speechless... Congrats... this is probably the most underrated series. What an accomplishment.

Wow TDN this is miraculous achievement. And there is only room for one such set. Amazing that you could do it. The only way to top yourself is to put together a similar seated quarter set in pop top condition. As with your dollars, there is usually just one nice coin available in each date/mint. Good luck on your next project.

    I'm partial to his 1848, 1866 and 1873-CC (a real wondercoin!).

As for the gem 59-S, no way in heck TDN will get that coin. The current owner has well above-average financial resources...

Your set is awesome. I agree with kranky that it's doubtful your set will ever be equalled.

Love that 1853. What a strike.
  • Do you think the old time collectors would have bragged about their sets if they had the internet?????Collecting was different 40 years ago-people only cared about the coins.

    Bruce,

I must have been in a poker marathon to have missed this post. But I now see it, and join in the kudos for your taste, and unending bankroll.

How about a head's up match. You put up the 1840's seated dollars and I contribute an equal value-your choice. No limit hold'em, or high-low Omaha.

We might even get the Travel Channel to televise it.
