Dumb Paypal Question

So I'm trying to figure out what the paypal fees would be if someone sent me X amount of money. The fee schedule on the paypal website indicate that Paypal is compleyely free to both send and receive money.

Direct from their site:

How does PayPal make money?

PayPal offers its payment service free of charge to U.S. consumers for personal use. Business use requires a Premier or Business account, which provides premium features for a low fee. These transaction fees provide PayPal with revenue.

So why on earth are we paying paypal fees? When transferring money from my personal account to yours, according to the above statement if I send you $10, you will have exactly $10 in your paypal account, not the $9.50 that ends up in there. And if anyone can locate on their site the correct fee schedule, I would appreciate it.

  • Business and Premier can accept credit card payments. Personal accounts cannot. However, once an account is a Business or Premier account they must pay the same fee schedule regardless of the source of the payment.

Also after a certain dollar amount has been reached per month on a personal account, paypal will mandate a business account (and fees) be used. This however can be circumvented if one sends money ala "quasi-cash"

Personal accounts can accept up to $500 in payments a month. Premier and Business accounts are unlimited.

I think people obsess to much over fees...as a former Card Shop owner who had to deal with credit cards though banks and processing companies (talk about fees! - statement fee, chargeback fees, setup fee, minimum monthly fee, discount...on and on). Trust me, PayPal business is a GREAT deal.

I have both a Personal and Premier account. There is nothing in the PayPal rules against this. Use different email address and different accounts.

I DO try to steer small $$$ sales to the Personal account to save a little bit on the fees for the small purchases.

I tried that, but I wasn't allowed to link both PayPal accounts to the same checking account, so the personal account was pretty much useless to me. Any way around this, short of getting another checking account from my bank?
